Glucose rant (long)

I'm crying as I type this bc I'm such a hormonal mess. I just found out that I failed my 1-hour glucose test. Not to sound like "that person", but I'm one of the healthiest eaters I know. I drink TONS of water every day, eat fruits and veggies on the regular, and exercise at least 4 days/week. Of course, I enjoy some ice cream (or other dessert) many nights a week bc I love to have a little something sweet after dinner, but I wouldn't say I go overboard. I've been gaining the appropriate amount of weight steadily throughout my pregnancy (26 lbs at 29 weeks).

I failed my 1 hour but passed the 3 hour treaty with my first. I'm not the healthiest eater either! I'll be 29 weeks when I do the test this time. So I hope hormones don't mess with the results! I'm already preparing myself for the 3 hour just because of my past experience! I do believe if you failed the one hour and refuse the 3 hour then you have to start doing finger sticks, but I'm not sure

I failed my 1 hr and passed my 3 hr. I'm extremely conscientious about what I eat and stay super active. Remember, GD can be heavily influenced by genetics, not just diet and exercise. I also beat myself up when I failed the 1 hr, but had no prob with the 3 hr. Try to stay calm and know you didn't do anything wrong!

It doesnt matter if you are a healthy eater or not, it means the insulin in your body is not working the way it should to break down the sugar your body produces. If your body is making sugar at night or while fasting thats when you fail the glucose test, so really you didnt do anything wrong, but your body just cant produce sugar like that. I wouldnt refuse the test if at all possible, they need to know so they can monitor the baby, bc when the baby is born he/she might have a blood sugar issue. I failed my 1 hour and had to do the 3 hr today, pretty sure I failed that too.

Just take a deep breath and try to relax, everything you are doing is for your baby, and its better to be overly cautious then not enough. Good luck.

Thank you, girls...I know this isn't half as dramatic as I'm feeling it is, but it's nice to be able to vent on this board and have other women who understand. And thank you for the words of encouragement. I'll set up my 3-hour test and get it over with :)

I'm not sure if it will make you feel better but for what it's worth, I am 100% positive that what you eat doesn't determine GD or not. I am normally a thin/average person but I eat a ton of junk. I'm talking about pizza at least 3 days a week, tons of candy daily, chips, etc. Even when I'm not pregnant! The only thing I have going for me is that the only thing I drink is water.

Anyways, I was positive I'd at least fail the 1 hour test since I knew how bad i eat plus i know there's a lot of false positives. I was already researching into the 3 hour test. Come to find out, I passed. ... with flying colors! My number was under 100! So hopefully this makes you feel better. Please don't think you should be eating better or exercising more because clearly you are way healthier than me. Please don't feel guilty. Everything will be okay. Even if you do fail the 3 hour, you couldn't have controlled that. GD is not your fault and at least you and baby will get the care you need.

Oh yeah and I took mine at 30 weeks :) I don't think that affected it! Try to only eat eggs that day until you take your test. Don't even chew gum! That'll give you the most accurate result bc the only sugar/carbs in your system will be from the drink.

I know, this is baby #4 for me, and I always end up with high blood pressure and early labor. I was trying SSOO HARD to just relax and take it easy, and I end up with GD! Im so mad, at myself a little. Lol, sometimes i feel like I've failed but then i remember it's out of my control. Let me know what your 3 hr result is!!

I'm a vegan ultramarathon runner who eats a prenatal dietician-approved diet and I was diagnosed with GD after my 1 hour test! I've gained 17lbs at 28 weeks and only rarely indulge in sweets etc. They aren't even bothering with the 3 hour test because my glucose was so high. I felt totally blindsided. But it's your placenta screwing with your pancreas. Nothing you did!! I had a really emotional day when I was diagnosed but venting here and in the GD support group, hearing other women's experiences, and doing my research as helped. So I feel you, mama! Feel free to DM if you need anything.

Like the ladies said above, unfortunately for GD people it has zero to do with diet and exercise:( This is my 3rd pregnancy and honesty I am the most healthy now than I have been in the last 6+years and of course THIS is the pregnancy I develop GD. My weight gain has even been on the low side this pregnancy. I failed my 1hr by only 5 points and still had to take the 3hr (which I failed). But if you are already a healthy person you won't have to change your diet too much. Just remember the benefits of being Diagnosed now and having the ability to monitor your sugar levels is a good thing. May not be an easy thing all the time but yet another sacrifice we make for our growing babies!

Diet and exercise mean nothing in whether or not you'll get GD. It's the placenta controlling it. Also, 184 is high. Usually 190 or above, they don't even do the three hour test and you are automatically diagnosed so there is clearly something going on that needs to monitoring.

It doesn't always go away- most of the time but not always. A lot of docs will have you do the glucose test again around 4-6 weeks post baby.

Take the 3hr as the 1 hour is just a screening and highly inaccurate ALOT of the times

Thank you, girls, for all of your comments of support and encouragement. I'm still feeling frustrated about this, but, as many have written, it may not really be in my control at all. So I've scheduled the GTT for Saturday morning at my local hospital so I don't have to miss any time at work. Phew! Can't wait to get it over with!
