birth plan
When did you start discussing a birth plan with your doctor?
I'm not a fan of birth plan. I think it should be birth preferences. But around 31-35 weeks is a good time to bring up how you want to birth. My dr gave me a list of things that were flexible during labor. Ex, she and I discussed that no one would ask me if I wanted pain med, I would ask for them. I also said I did not want to be hooked up to an iv, I was allowed light food and to drink water. I was not hooked up to a machine to monitor contractions, every 20 mins i was monitored for 5 mins. Some other things on the sheet were asking about pacifier use, where the baby would stay, if I wanted to do skin to skin immediately. Its good to educate yourself about the birth process and your rights as a patient. There are lots of things that some drs make you think you have to do. The only thing my Dr said that I couldn't do is give birth in the tub. I could labor there but when it came time to push the hospital would not let me deliver in there (they apparently didn't have liability coverage for that). By their tubs sucked and I didn't want to get that low anyways lol.
I asked my OB at my 32 week appt if I should write a birth plan. She straight up told me they never read them. Getting the baby out safely is their only concern. With that being said, I'm making sure my DH knows what I want in case I'm in too much pain to talk myself. I'm just planning on having an open mind and trusting that my dr will know what's right to deliver my baby healthy.
This is in reference to if there's a certain way you you want something, you make a birth plan and discuss it with your doctor to see if this is plausible. I.e. Medication free delivery (does your doctor think this is possible for you and if so) this is how you dictate that this is what you want and expect your hospital staff to follow through and not push any meds on you. Or this would be a good place to mention if you want to encapsulate your placenta, that way they know not to throw it away.. That sort of thing
In pa. They discuss it with you when you go back in six weeks..
