The lactation consultant needs to help you do a weighed feeding so you can see what he's actually eating. For a newborn, 20-50 minutes is pretty normal. As babies get older they get more efficient and then yes, it's entirely possible for it to take less than 10 minutes, but that takes time.
I'm really up for anything at this point. I know he is getting it when I feed because I hear him swallowing, the nipple is at the back of his throat, and he has about 10 wet/dirty diapers per day. I think I may just not be providing enough per feed, I really don't know.
And the "early cues" of sucking on hands, looking around, etc he does those all the time. Even after he has eaten a good amount he does that.
Try beer yeast! I used it with my first born and I have some ready in hand for this baby coming soon. I buy natural beer yeast pills and they really help produce soo much more milk.

I have to use a nipple shield due to latch problems also and my baby is feeding 30min-1hr every feeding and feeds every 1 or 2 hrs its exhausting but everyone says its normal at this age (he is 8days old). I also saw a lactation consultant and she said everything was great but i have a lazy eater. Sounds like your doing great mama just keep at it, everyone says it gets easier!
Yes my first experience with it was awesome! I would even soak my clothes and then it regulated with baby. My milk had not really came in after a week so I took one pill and I woke up in the middle of the nigh soaked as well as my husband lol at first I was super confused to what had happened ?
Some suggest brewers yeast powder usually sold at a nature supplement store I would guess or nonalcoholic beers but I took it in pills and had good results so it's really whatever you would want to try.
A weighed feeding is where they use a special, very sensitive scale and weigh baby before and after nursing. Then they can pinpoint exactly how much baby is getting from you. It's a really helpful tool in situations like this.
Do you have a scale? I had one with my first.. it was on her bath tub! That's what PP is referring to.. you weigh your baby prior to a feeding and then weigh them after to see how much he's actually getting. Some babies just want to nurse or are slow nursers! My first was like that.. I exclusively pumped because she couldn't latch at first but she learned around 4 weeks old.. by then we were used to quick feedings so I kind of chose to pump! I knew what she was getting and we different have to worry about staying home a lot to nurse! It worked for us but everyone is different! Good luck ;)
