I played basketball for years, and the #1 rule in high school basketball was mercy. Pass around instead of making shots, occasionally 'accidentally' mess up if there were no college coaches, etc. If they're trying their hardest, an still losing by 20+, take it easy.
On the other hand, if they give up at 20+, don't show as much mercy. You gotta show them what working hard is if they won't do it themselves.
It's poor sportsmanship to run up the score that excessively. It's the same reason college and professional teams will put in their 2nd and 3rd strings in the 4th quarter if they are far ahead. A win is a win, whether it's by 1 point or 159. They shouldn't be told they have to purposely not make baskets or goals, but they can put in the lower strings, let the key players rest (no point in risking an injury for extra points in a game you will already win) and use the opportunity of being head to call plays that need some practice.
I went to a highschool that got our asses kicked constantly. I played tennis, so for me, it was humiliating to constantly get beat by the better schools, so I did what losing is supposed to make you do. I worked my ass off, and soon I started being competition for them, then started winning a few games, then I started winning matches, little by little. Its one thing if it's a junior high. This is high school! If you suck and have a problem with the other team doing well, just forfeit, or become better. Its really that simple. A coach shouldn't be suspended because he's doing his job better than the other one, just like a team shouldn't be forced to play bad because the other team is terrible.
It wouldn't have been an issue if he let his second stringers get to play more too. That wasn't just a win. That was deliberately rubbing someone's face in it over a high school ball game. That's why he was suspended.

I think there's a rule in high school where if you lead by X Amount you should stop scoring.
I don't agree, ??♀️

It's poor sportsmanship. Even in college hoops you don't see teams running up the score this much.

Yeah, because when it comes to that big promotion, your competitors are going to take it easy and let you catch up, to be fair. ?
