how old?
just for fun, how old were you when you started to learn to fast for the first time?
@raheemah wow you teach them very early, that's amazing mashallah. how many hours do they have to fast?
Started practicing at 8-9 years old and used to do half days. Sometimes full days when I was 9. I started at 10 years old :)
I'll probably start earlier for my kids inshaAllah because I know my siblings and I all wanted to start earlier, so I would let them practice half a day when they want to.
I think by 10 (if they're healthy and strong) they have to fast though, to get into the habit, just like praying.
I teach my children pretty young around 3 or 4. They start off half a day once a week. By 5 full days twice a week. 6 yrs old fast 5 days of each week. 7 the full week, but I will skip a week..... So every other week. By 8 or 9 my children can fast the whole Ramadan. We also fast each month during the year. Which helps also. My older children (ages 11,10, and 8) all fast the full month. This year will be my 11 yrs old son, 4th full fast of Ramadan.
Now my 1st Ramadan was different, as I didn't have a real understanding. I took shahada at 16 and gotten married at 19. From 16 to 18 I didn't understand Islam. People who was Muslim around me told me some many different things. And one of them was it wasn't major to fast or pray five times. When I was 19 and married my husband. He help me learn and gave me a better understanding. I started reading and going to classes. And that year of 2005 I fast my 1st Ramadan. It was hard because I was learning as I go. But it was the best thing.. I felt at ease.
I remember doing half a day before I started school. My mom would let me and my brother to fast until dhoour prayer eat then continue until sunset. So 5th Grade is my first time fasting all Ramadan.
