Breastfeeding on a routine

Are any of you exclusively breastfeeding mommies on a routine. Since my lo is breastfeeding, it is kinda on demand. I want to change that and feed him on a timetable/routine. I need to go to work in April and it will help to have a routine. How did you get on one? Do you let lo cry even if he is hungry and wait till the next feeding time?

Yes, exclusively breast feeding and on a routine. :) You need to be consistent but it’s totally possible. I started being mindful of her schedule around 4 weeks old and slooowly started implementing the schedule I wanted (she’s 2 months). I wake her up every morning at 7am to feed I make she stays awake at least for a little while after every daytime feed. She gets her last day feed at 8 pm. (She also still has at least one night feed around 10:30 or 11 and sometimes she wakes up around 4am) If she ever wakes up early and hungry I always feed her early and then just adjust our schedule a little for the rest of the day. You never know they might be starting a growth spurt, getting sick etc... so hunger always trumps my schedule but I have found that 90% she will work with the schedule great. Here’s what we try to do (the first and last feedings are the most important to be at the same time everyday the ones in the middle can be adjusted a little as I need) All these times are when I feed her. I did the same thing with my son and loved it. We all have to find what works for us and our families. I needed a schedule and my babies have thrived on them.

^^@cammie...your schedule sounds like mine. It works for now and I still have enough to continue my stash for when I start back working.

Ds has been on schedule for 2 weeks now. Wakes at 2am for a feed and 5:15am. Next feed is by bottle (expressed breastmilk) 9:30-10am ( depending if he is sleeping) then at 2pm, 5pm and then bed time at 7:30. Repeat back at 2am. So he eats 6 times a day sometimes 7. He is 10 weeks and has been gaining weight perfectly fine! Typically 4-4.5 oz at a time. The evening feed when close together at 5-5:30 is 3.5 oz usually. So about 24-28 oz a day. Weighs 13lbs now and was 8lbs1oz at birth!

It is hard to get a routine at first, but you can try feedings on the schedule you want. A great place to start is with your first feed of the day. Just wake the baby when you want baby up and feed then. You do have to be consistent for that to work, so no sleeping in on the weekends. Then from there, just set the pattern. If baby is growing fine then waiting at least two hrs and starting to stretch it out to 3 between feeds is totally fine.

It's hard to start a routine when they're small it's on demand for the first few months
