Weight loss with breastfeeding
Weight loss with breastfeeding
I know they say babies can lose up to 10% of their body weight in the first week but he lost 10% in less than 48 hours! They haven't really said anything yet, but I'm nervous they're going to suggest supplementing. He eats pretty well, has had about 8 poopy diapers so far and a little more wet diapers. So I know he's getting something. And I actually pumped this morning and was able to get 15 ml which I was amazed by. Anybody have any more suggestions or reassurance? I already lost most control over my labor, I don't want to miss out on breastfeeding too.

In my breastfeeding class yesterday it was mentioned that the longer the mother has had an IV the more weight is lost by the baby. That is because the original weight was higher due to fluids and it is not a reason for concern. You may not remember it, but can you ask for how many hours did you have the IV?

Good point! A little longer than 24 hours.

Then don't let the nurses scare you into using formula and remind them about those 24 hours! Keep an eye on the weight but do not give up breastfeeding. You are doing great, girl!!!

Just keep putting him to your breast any time he wants. No pacis just nurse him 24-7 when he's hungry or wants comfort. Doesn't mean forever just until he gains his weight back. Your milk is enough and you are making what he needs. You can't let them scare you out of it. He doesn't need supplementing if he's content not acting hungry. And having wet and poopy diapers.

If you feed on demand, baby is having the appropriate wet diapers, and is feeding at least every two hours day and every three at night, he'll gain it back!!!!!! Trust your body, not the comments. Baby's stomach is the size of a walnut until like day three or four. The digestive system is the last to develop, meaning, it needs breast milk or formula to finish the process. Your milk will come in and he will start getting that fatty hind milk probably day 3!! Keep it up. Tell them you will discuss with your pediatrician if he loses. My guy went from 8.4 to 7.10 before we left hospital( two day stay). Also..... Kellymom.com has a ton of great material!!!!!! Trust your body, feed on demand, watch those cues, and monitor diapers! You've got this!!

No paci!!! Honestly a bf moms worse nightmare till you milk is fully established and so is babies routine.

It sounds to me like breastfeeding is going great.

I wasn't planning on a paci anyway. He just ate again from the boob but he was going strong for about 5 mins then started falling asleep. I also pumped 10 ml. I think they will leave me alone about it if I can keep it up. Sadly I have to stay one more night because I have preeclampsia and they want to watch me :/

My daughter was 6lbs2oz when she was born when we were released from the hospital Monday she was 5/14oz.. on Tuesday at her appointment she was 5/9oz. I didn't feel like she was getting enough but her pediatrician assured me their stomachs are so small like the size of a pea just keep latching her and keeping on demand and she would be fine and as long as they don't loose a pound and they gain the weight back by the next appt they are fine. Took about three days of breastfeeding and she is totally nursing like crazy I know for sure she's up over her birth weight at now just a week old this girl doesn't stop eating! Don't give up, I've never breastfed either and I formula fed before so it's a totally different experience, and odd not knowing how much they are getting but they are getting what they need from your breast milk. Don't give up ?? you got this!! I saw two lactation consultants in the hospital neither really helped me too much it was more reassuring finding a friend who breastfed all her babies I can't tell you how many times I text her and called her so far, maybe see reach out to someone. Breast feeding hasn't came natural to us, she falls asleep very quickly after latching and I have to re latch her, and keep waking her up, once my milk came in about three days after having her I literally felt like superwoman like I can do this and I do have what my baby needs ❤️❤️

In a day or two you will have much more milk come in so don't worry. As long as he is happy and has wet and poopy diapers you should be fine.
He will gain it all soon.

I also heard the IV thing-- the extra liquid plumps up baby and increases his birth weight, so he will lose some weight fast. He was heavier than what his birth weight would have been though, so it's not the same as losing 10% if that makes sense. Should be fine. Hoping all goes well! :)

All of these ladies have given great advice that I will second. All of the fluids you received during labor can skew his weight so it's okay to lose a little more than usual. As long as you are nursing on demand and he is having an adequate amount of wet and poopy diapers, you are doing good! He will gain it back once your full milk supply comes in.
