Womanly Art of Breastfeeding
Womanly Art of Breastfeeding
I'm reading it right now and one sentence really stood out to me. "Breastfeeding doesn't give you brownie points. It's simply the normal way to raise a baby." I love that! Looking forward to finishing the book.

I bf for 18 months... out of one breast.... I'm taking some brownie points lol

I just think that's a better way to look at it. Not like you're better than someone else or superwoman if you do it, just that it's the normal thing to do.

I bought this book but still haven't read it. This post reminded me of how much of a procrastinator I am. ?

Fracturedsnail, I just started it and I'm already on page 100. I don't want to put it down but I need sleep!!! I think it's great so far.

Love pre-baby reading--helps me feel more in control of the uncontrollable!
A sentiment for those who can't or will struggle with breastfeeding: I bf my first for 2 years and will bf this one. But by calling it normal it calls women who can't abnormal :/ I feel lucky that I have medically been able to and that I have supporting people at work and at home that enable me to bf. I don't want anyone to feel bad if they can't. Sharing this sentiment for those women. I've seen people devastated bc they can't, and to those mamas: you are normal and you and wonderful--you get that baby fed, however you can, because fed is best.

It's natural, I don't think "normal" is a fair word to describe it. I know many women who did there best to breast feed and their milk production wouldn't keep up. It can be a sensitive subject for some. I was lucky enough to ebf my son until 15 months. Doesn't make anyone better, though. Planning to ebf my daughter once she's here, but ya never know what could become an issue in trying to do it.

By "normal" I think it is meant to help take away the stigma. Of course there's always someone who can't and they shouldn't feel ashamed. Hell, maybe I can't but I'm going to try my hardest.

I really enjoyed that book :) I agree that it's both normal and natural. No one should have to hide or be made to feel bad while doing it. I guess they say no brownie points because the author thinks it's expected? But as we all know it is very difficult and takes some dedication.

I've breastfed 3 soon to be 4 children. It's not easy but I've never regretted it. I think I'll take my brownie points for the struggles we went through especially when I was working, nursing and pumping. Oh man tough times.
NewMommy·
I definitely believe working and pumping will be the hardest part!! So yeah I guess I can see some brownie points being awarded there lol. I think the author was just saying that it should feel like the natural and normal thing to do, instead of it being an "extra" or a "bonus" you know?
