Ultrasounds
Does anyone know if there are any real studies about excess ultrasounds being harmful? I've had two so far, one by the OB and one was private. I won't have another by the doc until 20 weeks, but I kind of wanted to pay for another one while I'm in Alabama visiting family so my daddy can see his grand baby bouncing around.

If that were the case then something would've happened with my now 20 month old lol I had sub chorionic hemorrhages and he had a dilated kidney that required surgery when he was 5 wks. So I can't even tell you how many ultrasounds I had during that pregnancy. I remember one day, I had three in the same day from different specialists and my OB. I've never heard of ultrasounds being bad. So I say go have your private scan!

Ncantu, I didn't really think they were harmful but I've seen people on here and other groups mention it. I'm just wondering where they are getting that from.

Yeah, I saw people saying that too! Especially in the beginning lol I was required to be monitored because for one, clots can be dangerous to the baby and two, his kidney was very important and needed to be monitored as well. I'm on my third and thankfully this pregnancy has been a lot smoother but I plan on getting some private scans too. It's fun to see the baby in there. Plus, it's reassuring and comforting to see things progressing. I enjoy ultrasounds and I can't wait to do the 4D ones!

I'm glad this pregnancy is going a lot better for you! I bet that was scary. This is my first and so far so good. I did 4D when I did my last ultrasound but only because I thought they would be able to see the gender clearer, but she could tell on 2D lol. I'll probably stick with 2D for the next one and get 4D when I'm much further along.

I had like 6 with my first so I would say no ? lol

Its not been researched enough but there is not enough evidence to say its harmful though. Plus us only take a few mins so not enough damage to cause to a fetus. I went private and usually had at least 12 us in total and nothing went wrong.

I had one at every appointment I had with my OB. I saw him monthly starting at 10 weeks, and then weekly at 28. My peanut is fine.

No the research shows zero harm to the fetus or the mother. Just recently WHO increased the number of appointments pregnant women should have throughout their pregnancy. I had 5 so far at 5.5; 6.5; 8.5; 9.6 and 13.3 weeks. Next one at 18.4 on Jan 5th. After that I will have one around 23rd week and from there I will go every two weeks.

I feel like I have read something about that too in the past. I have had a few too already and this had actually crossed my mind. Glad you posted about this.

Since I'm having twins I'm having 2 every 2 weeks. One at the OB then another at the MFM. So I'd say you're fine! ☺

I asked my midwife about this after reading some really scary things. I have ultrasounds every 2 weeks because were high risk. The information about it being harmful comes from back in the old days where the machines ommitted much higher levels of ultrasound waves. There is no proven risk anymore because the waves are reduced significantly. My peanut is growing perfectly on track and all her chromosome tests were fine. HOnestly I wouldnt worry.

My boyfriend's grandma was a nurse and she said it was bad. But she is 80 now, like the above post says, that was a long time ago lol. My doctor does an US every visit. Grandma has a fit! But I know it's completely safe. My 10 month old is perfectly healthy :) as we as my little tiny inside me.

I have had a sonogram every appointment and some in between due to bleeding to I doubt it

I don't know. I read it's not necessarily harmful but can be disturbing for the baby.
When I had my 12 week scan the doc did an abdominal ultrasound first, with baby very calm and not moving, and then he switched to a vaginal ultrasound. At that moment baby started spinning around A LOT and I couldn't help thinking I want to protect my baby, what if it feels something from the ultrasound being so close to its head.
So no, I don't have any proof, all I have is the feeling that my baby may not have enjoyed the procedure, so I will strictly stick to the minimum required Nr of ultrasounds, which are only two more for this pregnancy.

I had ultrasounds with my son every 2-3 weeks until 32 weeks and then every week with my so due to high risk complications and there was no mention of it being bad. I've had 3 so far and I'm 14 weeks today. My ob hasn't mentioned anything about it hurting baby.

Ultrasounds use sound waves so they are not harmful to the baby. :)

I had 8 with my daughter. She is perfectly fine and extremely intelligent (ahead of other kids in her age group). I've had 4 (technically 5, but two were within a few hours of each other) with this one already.
