21 month old speech
Ds is 21 months old and babbles a lot and does have some words probably only a few He can say not that, get down, no, yes, dad, mom, Duke, food, shoes, juice, milk, water, wash hands, dog, and probably one or to other ones. I try to tell him words for him to repeat when he talks but a lot he does is like mumbling. Dd had a speech delay and didn't start talking till 3 but Ds seems to talk or try more than she did at her age. Any advice?

I work in the 18-24 mo room at our daycare and that list is pretty common for that age. I have had 1 that just moved up to the two year old class who was a bit more advanced and I have others who babble or would rather stay quiet.

My 2 1/2 year old is non verbal and we see a speech therapist and 2 other ladies who specialise in developmental delays.
I think the most useful tool you can use with out someone having to show you is the "break the routine" method to encourage words.
What you do is you use any routine in your day and try to prompt words.
So say you are getting them dressed. Hold the item of clothes out to them but dont actually start to put them on. When your child shows interest in what you are doing say "on" and pause. Give them a moment to repeat. (Pause should be around 5-10 seconds.) Reward any attempt at communication with praise.
If they don't say the word thats okay, but pause long enough to allow them the chance. Then continue to put the item on.
Next item of clothes repeat again. Hold out to them. "On", pause and praise if attempted, continue to dress.
You can do this with any routine. Stop and pause, allow them time to fill gaps with communication.
We started doing this with blowing bubbles.
Blow bubbles, wait for their attention, say "more" and pause to allow them to fill the gap. Any attempt to communicate is rewarded with more bubbles.
(Obviously as my son is non-verbal we havnt had success yet with this method but thats more so link to his delay rather than the method)

My 24 month old doesn't like to talk. She prefer to signal. She babbles to my 12 month old. She communicates what she want without words, she grunts, sing (ohhhh, ahhhh, yeaaaaah, oweeeee, etc.) Her pedi said she don't talk because she don't feel the need to when she can get everything done the way she does. I was worried at first, but her pedi said the fact that she is communicating is good. She'll talk when she's ready. I'm in no rush (anymore) she's active, running, jumping, climbing, etc.

About 5 others I can't remember but I'm not worried she tries repeating a lot of words but doesn't know how to use them. Also tries to sing along to abcs and a lot more nursery rhymes. I've played them all the time since she was in my belly. Her favorite is no more monkeys jumping on the bed.
