Milk issues! Please help! :(
I posted this in the child raising forum but hardly get any responses there, so I thought I'd try my luck here. I have some concerns! My son turned one on the 18th of December and had his one year check up on the 20th. His pediatrician and I discussed switching him from formula to whole milk. I had some concerns since he was on soy based formula for most of his life. But at around 10 months she had us switch him back to a regular formula to see how his stomach would handle it, and all was well. So I went ahead and switched to whole milk. He enjoyed the milk so the switch was very easy in that way. His bowel movements changed almost immediately. For the first few days or so after switching, he'd have hard pellet like stools, varying I'm color from dark to light, a couple times a day. Before this he only had one bowel movement a day. It didn't seem to cause him any discomfort though so I waited it out to see if it was just his system adjusting. Then he started waking in the middle of the night crying and it seemed he had a bellyache. This only happened at night though. I called and made an appointment but it's not until January 12th and I can't get in any sooner. Today, however, he's had diarrhea. He's already had 3 diaper changes and has only been awake for 3 hours. Did any of you have these issues with switching to milk? I'm thinking he may be lactose intolerant since he had to be on soy based formula. Should I continue trying the whole milk and see if his system evens out? Or should I try soy milk instead? Obviously the best answer would be from his pediatrician but she's not in the office on weekends and I don't want my little guy to be miserable.

My daughter had this problem when we put her on soy formula. It just took her body some time to adjust to it. But after that all was well. We didn't have any problems going to milk once she turned a year.

This happened with my second baby. So my dr suggested trying silk soy milk and the almond milk both are in the refrigerated section with regular milk and both are for people with milk issues. The milk is actually very good. My mom drinks it and I do a lot too since I'm lactose intolerant. He liked them both but I stuck with the soy milk. My cousin had the same problems and she used the almond milk. Both were approved by my pediatrician and hers. Some babies can't handle the whole cows milk at a year like others. It makes their tummy work more and it's just harder for some of their body's. Hope that helps. I understand. Both of my kids have had serious issues with formula and milk but both of them are now on regular whole milk and it is their favorite thing to drink. It will get better. Sorry for baby's tummy!!

Did you switch cold turkey? (Stopped formula and switched directly to milk). If so, that could be the cause. The best way to switch from formula to whole milk would be to slowly introduce while milk. Cups/bottles that are 3/4 formula and 1/4 milk and then slowly increase day by day until the cup is all milk.

We switched gradually. I slowly added milk to his formula until it was completely replaced by the milk. Thanks for all the replies. I may give it another day or two and if nothing changes try soy milk.

That sounds like lactose intolerance. I had that problem before I got pregnant, if I drank too much milk, or ate too much dairy product, I'd get horrible cramps and diarrhea. Now I can drink milk all day no problem, thanks baby lol, but that's what it sounds like to me. From what I've been told, you can build up a tolerance to dairy but it takes a while and honestly I don't think it's worth it. It'd be easier to just accommodate your lo's tummy than try to change it
