How to Prepare Your Daughter for a Baby Brother?

Daughter wants sister

My almost 3 year old daughter is very smart & witty for her age. She does not want a boy/brother baby.... I’m so afraid she’s going to be so upset if we do indeed have a boy. She keeps saying “I just want a sister or girl baby”. Anyone have any ideas to help me break it to her IF baby is a boy?! We will know the sex within 2-3 weeks with a blood test from the doctor that also checks for chromosome defects.

Maybe talk up the perks of having a sister? Is your daughter into playing dress up? If she is maybe talk about how much fun it will be to dress up a girl vs. a boy.

My son is really wanting a sister as well, after two little brothers he’s like it’s time we had a girl baby.

My 6 year old is the same way. Luckily for us we’re not finding out the gender until birth, and I think she won’t care once she actually sees a tiny little baby! We’ll see. She’s very adamant about only wanting a sister.

I'd like to know the answer too! I have two girls and for the past year my oldest, 5.5 yr old, has been consistently saying she wants a baby brother. She said it again during this pregnancy and I said 'ok, but what about a baby sister?' And she took a pause and said, 'no, baby brother'. :/

I'm also afraid of disappointing her.

Hmmm well every time I had to tell my daughter she was having a brother, I just emphasized how awesome it is to be the current only daughter of the house... and she has a special role... and that her and I get to be girly and enjoy womanhood... I know she wanted a sister but I also told her I had no choice in the matter ? I told her it’s ok to be disappointed but she can help get boy clothes and what not too...

I HATED when people would come up to my daughter when I was pregnant and be like “ohhhh nooooo you are gonna be the only girl!!! “ as is it was a horrible thing! Thank goodness for all the talks before that nonsense so she could tell them with confidence that it’s okay and she don’t mind being the only female sibling in the house...

I am the oldest of four. My mom had a boy quickly after me (we’re only 18 months apart so I didn’t know better) and by the time she was pregnant with her third, I was adamant that I did not want a “boy baby” and I would tell her all the time how I wanted a sister and no more boys.

Sure enough. The third was a boy. I was peeved, but it didn’t last long. I would hold him, help with changing his clothes, throwing diapers away - doing little things to help. What was important that my mom would say “Hey! Do you know what big sisters do? They help care for the baby. Do you want to help me ?” I ate it up and made me feel “important.”

She may be disappointed at first but once that baby comes she’ll be smitten.

I eventually did get my sister :)

Aw I think I lucked out. My daughter will be 2.5 in a few weeks and is still at that time that I don’t think she knows about boys and girls. She loves babies, but they are all just babies to her. I’m sure she will be a bit upset at first, but then come around and be a proud big sister if it’s a boy. Just because he’s a boy doesn’t mean she can’t dress him up and help out! :) she might be thinking that.

My daughter was the same way, she had just turned 4 last year when we found out we were having a boy, she kept asking why I made it be a boy lol she wanted a sister so bad, but we told her God chose him for us and that seemed to help. Now we are having this little one and sneak peek says it’s a girl and she is over the moon about it. She loves her brother though and is crazy about him! Your daughter will come around too (if it turns out to be a boy), just give her some time to process it.

Thanks everyone!!! I was contemplating just not telling her hahahah! But she’s smart as a whip, and will definitely catch on. She has 3 boy cousins and I think she’s like ok I need a girl ahahhaha
