My son is not liking breast feeding at all. He won't even latch on and just squirms around try to look for my nipple but it's right there and he doesn't even try too latch. I don't think I have the patience to sit and try with him and I feel so guilty for it. I know he's use to the bottle nipple already and it really sucks that I couldn't even have that special bond with him while breast feeding. I'll never know what it's like or how that bond will ever be. ?

Bring him to the nipple. Literally bring and shove his face into your boob (your nipple into his mouth).

Just keep putting him to the breast. I know that sounds like, "well duh." But seriously, it was the best advice I got. Baby squirmy? Put him to breast. Baby cries? Put him to breast. Baby fussing? Put him to breast.

Just keep offering it, he'll likely take you up on it. Al of the best to you, momma ?

Could he be getting overly hungry? I agree about keeping on with trying. It can be very frustrating and hard. Regardless as long as baby is eating matters.

Take your boob in your hand and hold it hold flat like a hamburger.. Sounds weird but it makes your nipple easier for baby to latch. With your other hand take your baby and literally shove his face to your breast. He will open up and take it. Good luck op!

Maybe also try a nipple shield

What @princess said is the exact thing the LC showed me, and it helped solve our latch problems. She also said the point the nipple towards the top of the throat because it stimulates the sucking impulse. Once I started to do those things, she was latching on with no problems within a week

A nipple shield is a great tool for very young babies that have already been exposed to the bottle. It'll offer something a little more obvious for him to latch onto.

You can also try squeezing your nipple to express a little bit of milk and rub that on his nose and lips. It may encourage him to open up and latch on.

What princess said! Also what my doula/LC taught me. It made it sooo much easier for him to latch and he was a champ after that. Hope it all works out mama. ?

I'll give the nipple shield another try. I hope and pray I can get him to latch. All I want to do is breast feed him. This whole EPing is just getting on my nerves at this point but I'll continue to do so if I cannot get him to latch. Also, my nipples don't point right out, I guess I have flat nipples? But anyway, if I try the nipple shield and it works, would I be able to be successful without it? Or I should say do you ladies *think* I can be successful without it?

ETA: thanks for all the tips ladies! I appreciate it. ?

Keep trying! My son was the same way, even now at 15 days we struggle to latch. We bought a nipple shield and it has worked wonders. He nurses so well now. I just put the nipple shield on and bring him to the breast. It acts like a bottle nipple and is much easier for him. As he gets older we will try not to use it but for now, we use it. He was 3 weeks early and was too lazy to even try. Now he always looks for the boob :)

Yes! You can transition away from the shield. I had to use one for two months. One day I decided to try without it and she latched without it like we'd been doing it since the beginning! It was amazing.

I had the same experience as Carrimel. 8 weeks later we tried without the shield and we never looked back.

Once babies gain just a little bit of control over their necks and muscles, breastfeeding becomes much easier for them to figure out.

Flat and inverted nipples are actually something women can experience, so the shield may be your saving grace.
