Tongue tie
The ENT specialist we saw for my son doesn't recommend us to get the procedure done until he's 6 months of age. So with that being said, his appointment is in August and there goes trying to breastfeed my baby. ???

I mean that's why my doctor and I decided to seek into a specialist so I can give breastfeeding another try. My son is gaining weigh and doesn't struggle with the bottle nipples and the specialist said he uses anesthesia when he does the procedure. My son is 5 weeks. I think I will be looking for a second opinion. I really want to breastfeed and not just breastmilk through bottle.
Ciara·
Yeah I don't want to put my son to sleep either.
Thanks for bringing up the idea of a pediatric dentist, I was just going to wait til my sons doctor's appointment to let his doctor know

Try visiting pediatric dentist. We did dd2 around 3 months (caught it late) and most of her patients were newborn. I found a dentist that does the laser treatment. She latched perfectly fine immediately following her procedure.
Eta: she had a lip and tongue tie.

Peds dentist! Most of them use a laser!
Ciara·
Also, the ENT said he would give him stitches? I don't know, do they do that? That just doesn't sit right with me. I will definetly be going to a pediatric dentist.
Ciara·
He was old to be honest lol. I didn't like his office nor his nurses. I waited an hour to be seen all for him to rush us out in about 5 minutes. ? I will never revisit his office.

Ds2 had his done when he was 2 days old and still in the hospital. They gave him sugar water and used a scissor to do it. No meds or sedatives.
There are new studies out regarding anesthesia before 3 years of age and brain development.
I would seek a 2nd opinion.

Did they not offer the procedure at the hospital? My son got his done the dah we were going home. It took like 4 mins and he came back peacefull and sleeping.

What about a second opinion? My lo had his done with a laser at 8 weeks old with the pediatric dentist.
Ciara·
No sadly they didn't offer or even talk about doing it before we came home. Which sucks, I really wish it was done when he was born but it's okay. I am going to get a second opinion. I am not going to wait 5 more months and I am not going to have my baby put to sleep. That just sounds scary to me and not needed for like a 10 minute procedure. And why would stitches be needed? Like that didn't make sense to me.

That's crazy I've heard the sooner the better theres less nerves the younger he is. Ds was a week old when he got his done. Its helped so much!

Yes, definitely get a second opinion. We always tried to get tongue tied babies in before they turned two weeks. Waiting until 6 months doesn't seem right.
deleted-user·
Ds got his at a month no laser no stitches just scissors in a doctors office. Really simple procedure

Ours was the same, despite DD not even being able to drink from a bottle. They wanted to wait until she was older and do it under general anesthesia... you know, when it was riskier to my child & more profitable for them. ??
We found a pediatric dentist that couldn't believe our pedi & ent wouldn't revise it & even though he doesn't revise on babies as small as she was he clipped it in office.
I would absolutely get a second opinion, preferably from a pediatric dentist. There are many that even do laser to minimize bleeding & recovery time!

Mine had a topical anesthetic and there were no stitches. Unless it's very thick it shouldn't need stitches.
Ciara·
Rather it's clipped or lasered, I don't mind either or. I feel like since his is to the tip of his tongue, it should be done like tomorrow. I'm just not comfortable putting him to sleep. This isn't a major procedure, as I feel, he needs to be asleep for.
His pedi wants it done ASAP (as well as I do too), so I know he's going too help me find a pediatric dentist if I can't find one myself. Thanks for all the help ladies!

Why not? We got my daughters done within her first week! It wasn't even that bad
deleted-user·
I was given a doc to see the first week and I walked in, doctor had me hold her and clipped her tongue with scissors! It wasn't a big deal at all. He was old too! How bad is the tie? Is there a lot to clip? I know mine wasn't bad at all. No stitches, he just said that she would be a little fussy for the rest of the day many the next and then it wouldn't be a big deal. I just nursed her and she was good! I'm sorry you are going through this. Hopefully you find your second opinion! Good luck
deleted-user·
Mine was a ear, nose and throat doc and had no problem doing it! Your doc might have just been trying to make a big deal out of it. It costs a lot more to put them under then a little clip

My daughter's was clipped at about 4 days old. The pediatrician sent us to an oral surgeon, not an ENT. Is the tie significant? I know there is a number scale, but I don't remember it. They took her back, and then brought her back to us about 10 minutes (if that) later. I nursed her right away. They had us hang out for about 15 minutes to make sure there was no bleeding. And that was it.

There is a great support group on Facebook, tongue tie babies support group, and they have a list of preferred providers for each state. Maybe look there for someone else to do it sooner. There is no reason to wait?!

Also another thing to consider is (this is debatable) but you really should do the stretches after for 5 weeks to prevent it from reattaching. I couldn't imagine getting mine to sit still for that at 6 months old.
Ciara·
I have an exam on Tuesday morning with a pediatric dentist and then from there, we should be scheduling a procedure date. Fingers crossed it's done ASAP and not held back any longer

Sparkling took all the words right out of my mouth lol! Good luck!
Ciara·
What are these stretches you ladies speak of?

My son was born with severe tongue tie (had to be drip feed as he couldn't latch onto a bottle or breast) it was cut when he was 7days old. It doesn't require stitches and he breastfed straight after, latched like a pro!! It's a painless procedure my son didn't cry but I was an emotional wreak lol.
deleted-user·
Push to get this done! There is no reason not to and if you don't it will give you no chance to breastfeed if this is what you plan to do. My son had it snipped within two weeks of birth I'm the UK.
