Probably a dumb question but it's been almost 4 years since I had a newborn.. His umbilical cord fell off but there's still a little scab (I guess thats what you would call it?). Can I clean it out or wait for it to fall out?

I think you can clean it. Just dont pick at it.

Idk I would just continue to clean it with alcohol and let it come out naturally. But I had my daughter almost 4 years ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy.

I was told dont clean it, let it be unless its oozing.
deleted-user·
Yea I was told not to clean it just let it be..

Looks fine

Okay, I'm going to just leave it and continue to clean the outside with alcohol.

I clean my kids with alcohol as well...

My pedi said it was perfectly okay to clean it with alcohol. And I'm only cleaning the outside of it not the inside.
My son has a doctor appointment on Monday so I'll see what he thinks than! ?

Wow I didn't know that! My pediatrician told me alcohol was fine and the nurses at the hospital...but then again that was almost 4 years ago. So what do you clean it with now if you can't use alcohol?

The scab will fall off on its own eventually ?
As far as cleaning it, I guess all doctors have different advice. Mine told me not to even touch it or clean it.
But I know others are told to clean it.
Do whatever works for you ?

My doctor said it's fine to clean it with alcohol. It helps it dry up faster.

My ds2's scab lasted 5 moths before it fell off, I was to scared to touch it.

I was told to dab with witch hazel to dry it out. Don't pick at it, like stated above.

My baby still have the yellow oozing part. Is that bad ?
deleted-user·
Try dabbing with Betadine spirit and leaving it open to dry out.....

The issue with cleaning it with alcohol is that it dries the outside of the scab, and not the inside. So the inside stays wet and takes a lot longer the heal. You can dab it with water to take off any bacteria but that's about it.
deleted-user·
Yeah I wouldn't put alcohol on it.

My son is 2 weeks old and our ped just have us alcohol wipes because it fell of but wasn't completly dry.
