Taxes taken out of checks.

Taxes taken out of checks.

When my SO got his job as a cook; he originally put 0.8% of tax being taking out. Well they are taking 2.7% out and when he informed his boss, she didn't have much to say besides too fill out another tax form. So he does, now there was no option of what percentage to be taking out but he still filled it out and his boss didn't fax it out till about 1 week and half AFTER he gave it to her. Now they are taking out 2.7% w/ an ADDITIONAL 0.8% when all he wants is 0.8% taken out... His checks aren't even 400$ after taxes taken out and its taking a huge toll on out bills. As he informed his boss , yet again, she just brushes it off. My SO is getting real angry about it and I don't know what he can do besides maybe contact their billing office himself?? I just need some input or advice on what he can do to get it all fixed. Please ladies! TIA

I didn't know you could even choose how much tax gets taken out of a paycheck. I know there are other "fees" to pay per paycheck like health insurance and things like that, but I didn't know tax rate was an optional thing.

I don't know never heard of this. What state are you in? In CA we file a W2 that were we claim the amount of dependents.

I am in Arizona. They give us a W2 and additional paper to choose what tax percentage you want.

Never heard of a percentage being an option. Normally you put head of household, single ect . Dependents and they add it up and come up with a figure.

Is it an Arizona only thing?? I get the dependents and stuff but we have always had an option for tax percentage.

It might be an Arizona only thing. No idea. Like other pps said, I've always filled out a W2 and listed dependents, head of household, single, etc.

R u talking about how many depends to claim? Depending on how many dependents he decides to claim will calculate how much gets taken out.

No @hola. We get a W2 form which is where we list the # of dependents and everything but we always get another paper asking what tax percentage we want withheld from the check. I can't remember if there is a specific name for that paper or not. Baby brain right now ?

Ugh this is frustrating lol thanks though ladies!!

State tax? I've never heard of being able to decide what tax rate you'd like to pay. How does that work at income tax time? Do you owe money??

I've never heard such a thing. Are you sure it's taxes & not some other benefit? If he's making more now than he used to he might have been bumped up to a higher tax bracket. If he has any questions he should talk to the accounting/payroll people. Unless it's a mom and pop type business, I doubt his boss has anything to do with checks being sent out.

I don't think its state tax but I could very much be wrong. And no you do not have to owe unless you make x amount of money within that year or if you have no taxes taken out than you owe back, of course. I have never had to owe back to my state and I always chose 0.8%

@kk it is taxes. On his checks, it states "tax is 2.7%" and above it it says "0.8% additional tax". He just goes to his boss since she is the only one that can help him get it resolved, which of course isn't really working. I think he is just going to have to contact his payroll office himself and see what's going on. Oh and he is still making the same per hour so I don't think that has much to do with it. Thank you though :)

Hmm, are you sure it's not Arizona state income tax? You can't choose your amount for federal taxes.

More than likely you will get a nice tax refund if they are taking out so much.

Sometimes it's best they take out a lot so you don't owe any money back later

I'm in tn and we do this. Call the IRS. And have them send you another form, fill it out, and fax it back in directly to them.

Or go to HR and have them fix the issue since the boss obviously doesn't know what she's doing.

Contact payroll, an accountant or your bank. They should be able to tell you how to fix this problem. On a side note if it isn't fix by tax time you will get a large refund for paying to much in tax
