Yep he has to have everything that's listed they just give the highlighters boxes and pens to the teacher... ? The home room stuff will be his to keep except the tissues.

I think for electives they usually send a list home the first day they take the elective. Also only buy a package for the ones that say a package. Like for math it just says glue sticks so just give him some glue sticks in his pencil bag.

Get everything on the list but you don't need a separate box of pens/pencils etc for each class. That's just what they will need for each particular class, but they don't require their own special set, so it's really just make sure you have those items. Does that make sense?

The notebooks though... most classes DO actually require you have their own for that class. Example math requires 2, science requires 1... they really do need separate notebooks.

@staci, the notebooks and folders we're planning on buying seperate. Even if it turns out he doesn't need that many they're handy to have. It's mostly the highlighters that are throwing me off. Even in college with 5 different classes I never used more than 2-3 highlighters a semester, so 4 packs seemed a little excessive. That's 20+ highlighters. Unless they are assuming the kid is gonna loose them on the regular lol.

ETA: even in the special ed class he needed like 5 notebooks and folders, so I'm used to the overload on those lol.

Just asking if anyone has ever done this but what if you do supply all your child's needs from the list but don't allow them to take them all to school. All they do is take all the supplies and put them into a cabinet to be shared amongst everyone. And it's not like at the end of the year when school is over they give back what wasn't used they keep it and thats after they do their best to hold onto as much as possible from the door. I've subbed in classrooms where they do this and still make the kids to backflips to BORROW a pencil for that one period that they have to trade something to get back for said pencil that the parents paid for in the first place. I mean- are they sent home and not allowed to attend school because they didn't stock the school cabinets? When I see these lists they freak me out. They're extensive and knowing that it all basically gets thrown in a pile that the kids have no say over makes it worse. In many cases the lists can be two pages long or even more and I've been told directly that they probably won't use all that, it's there in case it's needed for others. So if you bought sturdier $1 folders and someone else bought flimsier 15€ folders, shouldn't your kid have first pick of the better supplies? NOPE, they don't even give them that much. What happens if someone doesn't bring the list in? This is a serious question.

School supply lists are ridiculous these days. I remember when it was just bring some pens, pencils, and paper to school lol. I wouldn't be surprised if they did want separate packages for each class. I helped get school supplies for my husband's younger siblings one year and his brother who was in 8th grade needed 10 glue sticks. I kept asking myself wtf are they going to use 10 glue sticks for? We didn't even need glue sticks when I was in 8th grade.

I'd just buy enough for him to carry in a zip up pencil case. Kids unfortunately DO lose their stuff... usually within the first 2 weeks. ? The list seems excessive though. I'd keep the extra pencils, pens & highlighters at home and check in with him frequently to see what he needs.

@mucky. Yes they buy the supplies. Each child takes in the listed items and then they are used throughout the year by the class. Not like it is here.

My kids have a supply list similar to this for middle school. Each class has a separate list.
