31 weeks and diagnosed with GD
31 weeks and diagnosed with GD
Why do they wait so long to diagnose pregnant women with GD? I'm 31 weeks and just found out today I have it. I go in tomorrow to see a dietitian.

First off, don't blame yourself. This is something that was caused by your placenta hormones, and it affects all types of moms. It's nothing that you did or didn't do. There are some risk factors for GD, but all types of people can get it.
Usually moms are tested between 24 and 28 weeks because GD typically doesn't show up until the third trimester, so testing earlier might not catch it. (I'm not sure why your test was after 28 weeks.)
It is totally possible that you will continue your pregnancy without medication and only slight modifications to your diet, if any (such as eating three meals and three snacks and not going more than three hours without eating during the day) -- you may be able to control your blood sugars with diet and exercise.
If your doctor automatically schedules you for an induction or C-section without good reason, find another doctor. Plenty of moms go into labor on their own and deliver healthy, normal weight babies.
I don't know the rates of C-sections, inductions, and higher weight babies are with this diagnosis. I had mild GD and didn't need meds. My baby was born vaginally at 40w5d (induced for an unrelated reason). She was 6 lbs 2 oz. Her glucose level was a little low at birth, but not dangerously so, and I was able to nurse her back to an adequate level. And she is perfectly healthy!
Your baby does a lot of growing in these final 2 months. 9 weeks is plenty of time to adjust your diet and ensure that your baby is getting adequate nutrients and growing at a healthy rate! I hope your dietician and providers help you feel better about this, too. It's their job to inform you of the risks of GD - which can be a little scary - but they should give you the tools and the support to get through the rest of the pregnancy in the most healthy way possible.

Thank you so much for this! I do feel better after reading your comment. I saw a dietitian today and she also informed me that it's not my fault. It's just scary to hear the risks that come with GD

Ditto the first comment!
With my first I had an uncomplicated vaginal birth to a healthy 6 lb 7 oz healthy boy. They talked about starting cervidil at 39+5 but luckily I went into labor on my own ? It is entirely possible! Induction doesn't have to mean hospital with IV meds immediately, realize there can be a couple lesser invasive measures they can take first to help start things along with the usual walking, pineapple eating and sex.

I was just in freak out mode! I think a majority of women who get diagnosed with it automatically jump to the conclusions that I did. I'm SO happy to hear that it's possible to try to have the delivery that I want (God willing).

I had GD and had a 7lb 2oz baby vaginally. (Water broke at 37 + 5). High risk dr explained its genetics and no matter what you do or how healthy you are pregnancy screens us for problems we will have later on in life.
Don't stress! It's all gonna be ok! Just check your sugar and cut out all sugar/ simple carbs.

Usually gd dosent show up untill around 27 weeks that's when Dr. Will test. Unless u have symptoms before 27 weeks.

I'm 31 weeks as well and was just diagnosed. So confused as I eat super healthy and workout 5x a week. They want me to see and endocrinologist which I was confused about. Not sure how I should be eating until then? All very scary.

It's not as bad as it sounds there is really nothing u can do. The placenta is the one that causes gd, because of the hormones so even if ur healthy and not overweight it dosent really matter. The hardest part is getting started because once u get the hang of it it's like second nature. This is my second time with gd.
