Trucker wives...

How long did it take for you to not get sad over long hauls? My SO has been to CA,AZ and back twice this week, which isn't bad because he's gone for a day or 2. He Just got home this morning and his next trip is 5500 miles! He leaves tonight. I started crying at work. Our DD is almost a year old and he's missing out on her learning new things. I'm missing his cuddles. This has been hard. Tell me it gets better ?

It doesn't. DH was OTR for two years. It became easier not to cry all the time, but it was still hard. He missed everything and I was constantly alone. I don't think it really gets better, you just adjust. I hated it and he FINALLY got a local job and realized just how much he missed out on with ds.

ETA: BUUTTTT, he was also gone anywhere from a month to two months at a time and home 2-4 days. So that didn't help lol

You just adjust. I won't say it gets easier, it just turns into the new normal. Since DH and I got together he's been national guard, a railroad welder & now he's driving so he's been gone a lot. Just a month ago he started with a new department and is home every night, it's actually been kind of difficult to get used to that now ?

My husband is an OTR trucker. He has been doing it for five years. It was very difficult at first but I am used to it now, for the most part. He was only home for four days last month. I am raising our five month old pretty much by myself. My family lives in Charlotte & I am living in western Virginia. I take it one day at a time & I try to remember that he has it just as hard as I do.

Ahhhhh! Well... I guess adjusting will be my goal. It's hard ladies! He has to drive a while before he can go local. But now I'm super thankful he isn't gone for a month at a time. I need to figure out how this is going to work. Because I just can't keep up with everything. Working full time, baby, house chores, soon outside chores, bills, etc. Its overwhelming. I could cry right now. I am trying to leave work early to spend time with him. I think I need an at home job to really make this work.

Is he making enough money for you to just stay home? I think our husbands started driving right about the same time (if you're who I'm thinking of?) My husband has only been doing it a few months and he's gone 8-15 days at a time. I'm here with all the kids and we've adjusted because we had to. It sucks but he's been making pretty good money so that's nice.

You just get used to it. My DH has drove a truck for 8+ years. I used to cry everytime he left, it was difficult. It still is difficult just not AS difficult. It is hard on my daughter's when goes on a long haul. Thankfully he will be done driving in July before baby #3 comes.

He is still in training (started in January) so not making what we need to get by. Once he is done with this run he will be making over twice the amount he is now per mile. So once that is steady we might be able to keep me home. I'm going to apply for work at home jobs. That would make it easier to see him when he is home. Instead of begging my manager to let me leave. We will make it work somehow. It's still so new to us. But It's exhausting.
