I'm Wasting His Time

So today I decide to try and put my best foot forward and take SS6 and one of our dogs to the park for some bonding time. And you know what he says? That "I'm wasting his time" and that he only wants to be with his other grandmother.

What did you say to ss? I would have told him that was a rude thing to say and put him right back in the car to home. Where he would have been sent outside to play with no video games or any electronics. Then I would tell him no electronics until he writes an apology letter. That's uber disrespectful. Who's he learn that from?

You can't be mad when someone is honest. Find a hobby. Enjoy him when he comes around & let it be

Not your kid, not your problem! You are under absolutely NO OBLIGATION to do anything with, for, or around your STEPson. He's not yours. You have no rights to him and no responsibilities to him. Tell MIL and SO that he doesn't like spending time with you and that he said that you're wasting his time and if he WANTS to go somewhere with you great but otherwise you're not going to waste his time or your time anymore.

First of all, one comment that says not your son not your problem is ridiculous and in my opinion selfish. When you married DH you took on the obligation and responsibility of his son. Secondly... he's six. He's playing a little game to get to you (for whatever unknown reason) and you're falling for it. It is your responsibility to help teach and guide him through his life along with DH and BM. I would have responded half heartedly saying "you're right. But I figured it was such a nice day to wast our time at the dog park". As for MIL.... she needs to mind her own business. However, I'd sit down with DH and express your concerns and come up with a team effort to help guide ss6 behavior.

Also... I wouldn't refuse to take ss6 anywhere. I'd put it on him. If they ask you to take him say sure, if he wants to come with me. If they force ss6 to go with you and he throws more attitude I'd say something like "look even though I love you I don't enjoy spending time with you either when you treat me this way. So we can either be miserable together or make the most of it" this way you reassure him that you do love him, but not the behavior. You are also making it his decision and not forcing him to be nice to you. Everything is a game... unfortunately it will always be a game, you just need to learn to play it so that the outcomes are positive. Not negative like yelling fighting and arguing. No one likes to be forced to act a certain way (you don't either according to your post) so don't force him. Let him make choices, and that with choices come consequences that can either be good or bad
