So I've always bought new cars and always paid a high car payment per month. My car was totaled and I have to buy a new one this weekend since then insurance stops paying on the rental Monday. I've been considering buying a nice yet way less expensive car this time for a lower car payment. I can afford the higher car payments (or what I consider being high) but it would be nice to save some extra money a month. I loved my car and I'm sad it's gone but I'm starting with a blank slate now. Thoughts, opinions, or experiences?

I'd say only go new if you could also use a credit boost. Buying a new car is EXCELLENT for your credit (assuming you pay the car payments on time). But if you're already in good standing, it's not really worth it.

We only buy new. But we only buy Hyundais, because we love their warranty that comes with their new cars.
5yr 70000 mile bumper to bumper
10 year 100,000 mile warranty
5 year unlimited mile towing assistance
7 year unlimited mile for stuff like rust on the paint.

Their used cars can be certified pre owned but for most dealerships this means they offer the remainder of the warranty for a small price since they had to get it certified. I learned a lot working there. Lol. If you don't put too many miles on a car and like to stay new, do a lease. We thought about it but we bought a 2015 last year and put 38,000 miles on it because we are travelers

When I lived at home my parents bought me two brand new vehicles and when I got married i thought i was entitled to a new one from my husband but he's taught me new isn't always better. There's plenty of certified used vehicles for cheap with low miles. Last year we got a 2014 fully loaded fusion with 30k miles for only 15k. & tomorrow I'm getting a 2014 jeep patriot sport with 50k for 11k. Just shop around to find the best deals. Cars.com is always a great start.

I've purchased a certified used car that I loved and drove for 7 years. Best investment I've ever made. Then I bought a new and completely impractical car that I sold in two years. Worst decision I ever made. Now I'm leasing a car that I'm pretty happy with and planning on keeping after the lease is up. Jury is still out.

I drive a used Ford Fusion and I love it so much. But DF is a salesman for Buick/GMC so we get great deals on new cars. I've been subtlety hinting that an Acadia would be beneficial to the family. I have no problem with either new or used. Before my Fusion I had a '95 Cherokee and a '99 Altima that I only got rid of because I needed something easier for my son. Find a good salesman/place to buy from and you can't go wrong with new or used.

Buying new cars is ridiculous in my opinion, I can barely justify spending $7000 on a car. My car runs, it has good gas mileage, everything else is just bells and whistles

I said I would never buy new but after buying a lemon and sticking so much $ into it I decided to sell it and buy new. My new subaru came with lifetime warranty and I put a lot of miles on so to me it was worth it

We bought new because we wanted to know every detail about the car. It was cheaper a month then my used one with lower interest. It just made sense to us. But used cars always get higher interest rates but are easier to get financed for.

That's not true pp! Our fusion that we bought used had an excellent intrest rate. We got one of only 1.9. You have to tell the dealer what you want & we said a payment under 300 and a low intrest rate and we didn't sign the papers until he made that happen. We walked away with a payment of 270 & 1.9 intrest.

The previous pp is right. Used cars always have a higher interest rate than new cars when financing through a bank or credit union. I buy new because you don't know how the previous owners took care of the car and certified pre owned warranties dont cover everything. I take good care of my cars so buying new makes more sense for me.

Id buy a couple years older. Owning a new car is nice because your the first owner but not worth it.

If your car was newer, didn't you get a pretty decent check from insurance? A hefty down payment brings down your car note significantly

Wellll I gave in and bought a new 2016 Fusion lol. I love it thought. Pp I probably will get money back from the lady's insurance but the settlement isn't over yet. They only gave me a rental until Monday so I had to buy a new one fast.

Property damage settles out quickly. Your insurance company will reimburse for property even if hers won't. That way you can buy a car and they go after hers for the amount paid out. I would call my insurance company stat to get that check and see if you can change the terms of your loan.
