Stranger threatening to take away my sons toys

Stranger threatening to take away my sons toys

Ok so it was a beautiful day today so my dh and boys went to the park then to the little city for dinner. We were eating outside. Anyway my 3 year old screamed and this older women was eating by herself right next to our table. When he screamed she jumped and looked over at us and gasped a little. I calmly talked to my son and told him that we aren’t to scream while out to dinner because other people where there trying to enjoy their meal. Well about 10mins later he screamed again. I think I asked if he wanted to go potty, because I knew he had to but he’s a little scared of going in public bathrooms, anyway he screamed NO. Well this lady turned to him and said now give me your toys!!! I ignored the lady, took my son to the restroom to talk to him about not screaming. I took it as she was threatening to take his toys from him. My dh didn’t see it that way he thought she was joking. But something about the way she reacted when he first screamed and his 2nd scream made me think otherwise. Luckily my son was very Well behaved after my little talk With him and the lady didn’t say another word. Now she’s lucky she didn’t because I was about to go off on her!! What do u ladies think about this?!? I would never say that to someone else’s kids. Especially when I, as his mother, was working on correcting his behavior. Now I understand she got startled when he first screamed but to turn to a 3 year old and say “now give me your toys” was beyond extra!! What do u think?! I handled the situation very well imo

Handled it better than i would ?

I personally wouldve said 'excuse me, but what did you just say to my child?' Then i probably wouldve went off on her before she even got started trying to explain anything about why she said what she said.

Momma bear aint one to be messed with.

How nice was the restaurant and what kind of toys would you bring to a dinner table?

I doubt she was really going to Take his toys. She was probably just annoyed.

That said I would never have the audacity to yell at another mothers child

I would have just shot her a look, unless she got more persistent.

She sounds like a nutbag. I'd of probably gave her a wierd awkward look and that's it. I honestly wouldn't have done much about the screaming either since it was outdoor seating unless it was a real fancy restaurant and in that case I wouldn't have been there with my toddler. If it was like blood curdling screams the yeah but a little happy excited shreek here and there from my toddler is fine with me.

It was iron hill. Has anyone ever been there before? It’s a brewery type restaurant. She said it so quietly that I just ignored her and took my son to the restroom, again because I knew he had to pee, and I wanted to give him a good talking to about not screaming like that while out to dinner. I did shoot her a little look as I got him out of his chair. She did seem a little nutty. But like I said i ignored her and Handled his behavior after the 2nd time he screamed. It wasn’t happy screams either he was exhausted and was upset about something. My kids bring little toys wherever they go. They were playing with LEGO’s and little Mario brother figures

If she was trying to enjoy her dinner she should probably stop trying to parent other people’s kids. What if someone had a child there who was special needs and that’s how that child communicates is to yell in different tones. Would she still be quick to say something out of the way? Just recently I was out to eat and a lady had her special needs son who was that way, she kept apologizing, but I told her there was no need. He was expressing him self, and he was having a good time. I would never react to any child that way! Maybe she’s not a mother, but she was definitely rude.

@knock it was just a few little LEGO’s and Mario figures. Not like any crazy loud toys or anything like that!!

It was pretty bold of her to speak up and interrupt what you were doing, but I wouldn't take it so personally. She probably used similar tactics on her own kids and thought it might help. No, it's not her place but I wouldn't go off on her. I feel like that sets a poor example to my kids about how to treat other people. Be the bigger person.

Anyway, I think you handled it very well. Kudos momma!

I would have demanded some of her food, since we're sharing, right?

@leo I did not say a word to her at all. I just spoke to my son about not screaming. And pp that’s what I did after the 2nd time. I asked him if he would come with me to the bathroom and I had a talk with him. I don’t even think he heard her say anything to him at all really

Iron hill!!! Ah love that place! I would have let the first comment go, but would have been ready if she opened her mouth again. It’s one thing if it were in a joking way... but it doesn’t sound like it was.

And iron hill isn’t a quiet place... I would take all 3 of my boys there without concern

Yea @momma u know cause u went to school there!! It’s nice but not fancy in any way. We’ve been there many time before. I totally understand that she was startled the first time he screamed but to turn to him with her hand extended out saying now give me your toys was way out of line imo. And again I didn’t say a word to this women. Just kind of gave her a little look the 2nd time he screamed.

I would never say anything to another parent regardless of whether they're trying to control the situation or not. It's not my business or my place to tell them what to do. It's best not to get involved in that kind of thing.

Idk, doesn't sound like that big of a deal to me. I would have just laughed at her and did an "umm no". She could have been joking it's hard to tell sometimes, but I'd be on guard if she were to say anything else or if she would actually try to take the toys.. we would have a problem.

Some people think they are helping by trying to jump in too, even though it's not their place. I wouldn't take it too personally.

Yes I know pp. I would never in a million years, unless another child was causing my child harm, say anything to a child!! I just found the whole situation bizarre

It would be one thing if you were letting your kid scream nonstop and disrupt, but you were aware of his behavior and working with him to be more calm. Joking or not, that comment would have annoyed me.

Yea that’s what I’m saying casvy it did annoy me because I was correcting his behavior. She may have been joking but I wasn’t!! I wasn’t letting my child just scream and not address it. So she was out of line imo to say anything. Joking or not I don’t care!! She doesn’t know me or my kids so she should have stayed out of it!! I was handling him the way I always do which is to talk to him about his unacceptable behavior!!
