Anyone have any experience with moving out of an apartment and how to make sure I get my deposit back? I know I have to clean everything, but what about the small things that are somewhat broken? Example: towel rack that is cheap as hell that broke off within a month of us being there. Should I have them come out and fix it before we move so we don't have to pay for it? To me, there's no difference if they fix it now or when we move but I don't want to have to pay for it when I wouldn't have to if I was living there. Hope that makes sense.

We are also moving from an apartment.
Report everything that needs to be fixed to your manager and see if the maintenance can come fix it.
Our towel rack was broken too and they just fixed it a few days ago.
Also we had a leak in the ceiling that they patched and few other things that they have fixed or are going to.
As long as you make sure you tell them everything that needs work before you move you should still get your deposit back. Unless you did REAL damage. But as long as they have documented that you told them all the things that need fixing, they shouldn't make you pay for it.
At least thats how it is here.

If you hung anything on the walls, make sure you patch all holes. Report anything broken before you move. You already know to clean very well, so that's about it! You can have the manager walk through with you after it's clean and see what they say.

Also don't forget to get your carpet cleaned and proof that you had it cleaned. It's a health thing, gotta have the carpets cleaned before moving in another family. It's cheaper getting done yourself than having them do it.
That's if you have carpet at least, if you don't no worries.

I use to be a property manager before I became a SAHM. All apartments are different & all states are different. Where I live now a professional steam cleaning of the carpet is required by state law so that automatically comes out of a deposit.
I agree with the other pp that said to request the manager or maintenance Mgr do the final walk through checklist with you and have both parties sign & date and you get a copy. I would put in a work order for small maintenance items now ahead of time.

Replace the little drip pans (not sure what they're called) under the burners on the stove. Shampoo carpets if you have them. Take a look at your lease, our has an outline of what they expect upon move out.
