My MIL is simple and loves the wine i get her from target. My mom on the other hand likes Merlot which i feel is more dry. If You want sweet stick with Muscat grapes.
Do a search on red blend wines and white Zinfandel
( they're sweet type wine )
Target has a cheaper selection, and it's pretty good. So does Jewel Osco, but i just learned that they're not everywhere... Maybe Ben & Jerry's can suggest a cheap sweet wine. Personally i prefer the sweet tasting wine over the dry tart tasting ones.
Maybe start by finding out if your MIL likes sweet vs tart. That would make a huge difference.
Or You can never go wrong with Sangria ( of any brand ) and they're not that expensive either... IMO ?
It sounds like you are in the states which makes it hard for me to help you for I am (Or was before I got pregnant) a wino here in Canada. We may not have the same brands. Wine goes but a sweet/bitterness chart essentially. If you are doing a red do a nice merlot. It is somewhat in the middle and a white a nice chardonnay. It's not too dry or too sweet. That's what in would be doing ... hope this helps!
Apothic red is one of my favourite wines it's a blend from California. The bottle is impressive looking as well. Not sure if you can get your hands on BC VQA wines where you are but quails gate chasselas is one of my favourite whites it's a blend as well as Latitude 50 which is another white blend. Anything Kim Crawford is good.
I love pretty much any white from New Zealand, they have a really unique and fruity taste - Sov. Blanc also called Sov. Marlborough when from that region of New Zealand..... mmmmmm, I can't wait for December!!
Since you aren't sure if she prefers red or white, you could do one of each. Mark West Pinot Noir and Kendall Jackson Chardonnay are both great and both should cost you under $30.
If she prefers one over the other, she could put one out during the shower or use it for a get together since it's always nice to different options.
