Dental work while pregnant

Dental work while pregnant

I've read that it's good for pregnant women to go to the dentist normally during their second trimester if they need dental work. I don't NEED anything done but I'm 17+3 weeks and have been wanting to get my older metal fillings removed and have the ceramic ones put in and would like to do it before baby comes in March.

I've had a wisdom tooth removed during the second trimester and they did an x-ray, localized to my face. I couldn't obviously have any pain relief or anything outside of numbing my gums (I still felt it). I would wait for that type of work until after baby personally, but it wouldn't hurt to speak with your dentist. I only had mine removed because it was more of a danger in than the procedure to take it out.

I work in a dental office. Dental work is safe and ideal in the 2nd trimester. However, a lot of times when replacing silver fillings with composite fillings, people often have sensitivity afterward (sometimes extreme). I would wait until baby comes if switching them out is important to you. We often recommend leaving silver fillings alone unless they need replacing, although I understand each person has their reasons for wanting to replace them :)
