You could talk to a recruiter for all the details . They'll give you the best answers. And sometimes if you do a quick enlistment you get a bonus.

They get paid but I'm pretty sure no access to funds until after basic training same with the signing bonus if got one. That's how it was when my husband enlisted in the Army 8 years ago we had money saved for that transition period. Money saved is always a good idea if you can afford to.

Kals- Really? My husband joined the Army 8 years ago also and he got paid during basic, it took a month to start receiving it but he got it.

The best thing to do is ask the recruiter. There are things that are based on someone's MO (the job they choose to do). And really only they can help with that. No matter what always save money in this regard. And get with your son's dad and ask if it's alright to move with him (I'm hopeful you have no problems with that. That can make things hard) also I would get it in writing just to be safe on all ends.
