Solids should never replace a feeding. He’s too young for it anyways, but you definitely shouldn’t be swapping solids for a feed.
You always want to offer food AFTER the breast..
You also might want to wait at least another month and when he's showing all signs of readiness!
If your pediatrician says it's ok you can start solids. We always offer the bottle first and then the cereal. All babies a different and some a ready for solids sooner than others, but until six months solids should be more like a treat not a complete meal replacement.
@laniejay, @carpetmushrooms, it was after a feed he just wasn’t ready to eat at his normal time for the following feeding. And he is read for solids he sits by himself. @mobo1992, his pediatrician said it was fine for him to start
@lovelyjane awesome! Have fun! I can't wait to start trying out purees :)
@mobo1992, me too but he loves his cereal I mix it with breast milk so he loves it lol but I’m super excited for veggies since I craved veggies my whole pregnancy
@lovelyjane I really excited to try veggies, probably green beans first :)
@mobo1992, not all pediatricians are up to date with the latest recommendations / proper information.
Yes all babies are different which is why it’s recommended that wait till six months and most importantly that your baby is showing ALL signs of readiness.
@badwolfmomma15 I think I trust my pediatrician who has a degree and raised her own babies (recently). My daughter is definitely showing all the signs needed to eat rice cereal. I choose to wait on the purees just purely because I don't think she's ready for them, but she loves the cereal and is doing great on it. She needed it because formula just wasn't enough for her.
@mobo1992, she was probably going through a growth spurt and cluster feeding.
@mobo1992, exactly what signs of readiness is she showing? If you believe she’s ready for rice cereal then you would think she’s ready for purees no?
Why makes you think the formula was not enough for her?
Why would you trust anyone other than your own research when it comes to your own child. There’s mora to being ready than sitting up.
@mariapb because I didn't go to school to be a pediatrician. And yes I've done my own research, I just didn't follow what my pediatrician said blindly. @lovelyjane you're a great mom and you know what is best for your baby! I'm sure you did your own research, and wouldn't start cereal unless you thought he was ready! Enjoy this time of new beginnings!
Your her mama you know whats best for your baby and how to raise her and listen to what your pedi says who has a degree and years of experience and only you know your daughter and what she is ready/not ready 😊
@ndnprincess7, @badwolfmomma15, @mariapb, everyone is allowed to raise their own child regardless of your personal opinion make choices for your own children not pushing your ideology on everyone else the only person allowed to judge what is right for their child is the mother. Unless you hold a MD license your not entitled to question someone else’s parenting. me and my pedi discussed my LO starting solids and we are only doing it for a treat after a nursing session and every child is different just because you think your way is right doesn’t make it so for someone else’s child
@lovelyjane, no but what I said is a logical reason for why the formula isn’t enough.
Of course everyone is is allowed to raise their own children their own way. I never said they couldn’t.
I was never pushing my ideology on anyone.
I didn’t question her parenting. I simply asked her a few questions so I can understand her situation better before I offer any advice.
I agree yes everyone’s child is different. Which is why I said the child needs to show all signs of readiness.
And just so you know yes pediatricians have degrees. But they are not required to continue their education. So sometimes pediatricians give outdated information.
@mobo1992, i do not doubt for a second that she’s a great mum but doctors aren’t infallible. As has been stated they’re not required to continue their education so lots of them give outdated advice. I personally would rather receive advice from other parents who are up to date with information.
Haha.. My last pedi said it was okay to feed my baby solids at 4 months!! Did i get anew pedi for my son??? you bet your ass i did.
They aren't always right. I knew babies digestive system wasn't ready to digest solids yet.
Be careful not all of them know there shit.
This is from a medical school. It discusses why rice cereal is not always the best first food and also discusses the need to wait until at least 6 months of age.
Just some light reading for a Friday afternoon! :)
@carpetmushrooms, we aren’t doing rice cereal though we are doing oatmeal cereal
@lovelyjane someone else mentioned rice cereal.. and that article still states it's best to wait until at least 6 months
I love reading all these educated mamas on this post!
My pedi said 4 months too...and I educated him on infant nutrition as well as the AAP and WHO stance on the matter. He called me later and apologized. He’s an amazing pedi and even he can admit they’re human and not omniscient. They can’t stay up to date on everything.
