No need to be scared...it's REALLY uncommon, but it's the thing people get scared and panic over...I have seen a LOT of high fevers in my years...103-105 and not one bad outcome. It's really unusual to get to 107-108...and for 10 consecutive hours...that means it never came down with Tylenol/Motrin...but I am a firm believer that knowing and being educated helps the decision making process. Really, the thing you need to keep an eye out for is dehydration...
@Kay we give elderberry during any illness bc it's an antiviral AND immune booster.
When DD had strep I also crushed some garlic & "marinated" it in raw honey & lemon juice. After a few hours I took out the garlic. I gave 1/4tsp 3 times a day. She hated it but it definitely helped.
When we did finally head to the doctor after the weekend (DD never presented throat discomfort just upper respiratory stuff) she had nothing on her throat & almost didn't even test positive for strep.
We do NOT mess around with strep. Especially her being special needs... I know too many PANDAS kids that deal with systemic strep issues. We continued what we were doing & added the abx from our doctor.
As an adult I did use garlic to treat my own strep... I used to get it all the time. Haven't had it since the garlic regime (which was awful but worked. lol)
Thank you guys so much! ?
@pp wow fever causing brain damage makes me so scared! But everything given is such good info thank you!
Someone asked when a fever is serious...my doctor says it has to be at 107 for 10 consecutive hours before it will do brain damage. "Brain damage from a fever generally will not occur unless the fever is over 107.6°F (42°C). Untreated fevers caused by infection will seldom go over 105°F unless the child is overdressed or trapped in a hot place." ссылка
I love runs suggestions...would do that...for fluids we count jello and popsicles which are often easier to keep down. You can do Tylenol suppositories if needed, I would only do them for fevers higher than 102, otherwise the fever is a good thing helping the body fight the infection. Hope he feels better soon!
I'm so sorry! I hope he and your husband feel better ASAP and that you don't get it. There's not many things worse than a sick momma taking care of a sick family.
I hope you don't mind if I ask this on your post! Runs, will the elderberry syrup help with strep throat? Also when is a fever concerning? My DDs both have strep but DD2 is very red faced and has a 102.9 fever ? I know that alone isn't concerning but what if it stays at this temp (I did give a dose of Tylenol).
We do skin to skin with a light blanket. You want to avoid baby getting the shivers bc shivers tell the body it needs to warm up.
Even when DD had high temps we were able do skin to skin for an hour & it came down a good 2 degrees. We rolled her off to sleep next to us & her temp stayed pretty stable the rest of the night.
Our flu regime:
Elderberry syrup 3-4x a day
Megadose Vit C
NO SUGARS (or carbs) this include pedialyte
Bone broth
Coconut water (also makes great popsicles if you're trying to bring down temp)
Steamy showers w/ lavender & eucalyptus (Lavender for the littles eucalyptus for adults)
LOTS of fluids
We don't treat fevers under 102 for babes over 6mths given we aren't worried about dehydration. Generally not until over 103.
Skin to skin is FANTASTIC for temp regulation. And then we opt for Lavender EO or a tepid bath w/ Epsom salt. If we pull out meds for fever we only use ibuprofen.
Tamiflu is not a safe option & in Japan actually stopped recommending it after an increase in serious adverse events in pediatric patients. Plus it MAY reduce flu by 1-1.5 days.
Elderberry syrup is safe & proven to significantly reduce BOTH severity & duration of the flu.
Times we've had the flu kiddos were fever free in less than 24 hours & back to normal in 2 days. Being mom & not being good at resting it took me 3-4 to feel totally myself again.
Guys if I do skin to skin is it ok to do thru the night ? :( he will only be able to sleep if he's on my chest he doesn't like to sleep next to me...
@mrs It was 103 this morning now it's going back and forth anywhere from 99.9 to 102... 5 minutes ago it was 101.2 ?
@cajun my husband brought it home from work! ? him and ds are sick and I'm tired, frustrated and just praying this will be all over soon!
Someone suggested to me ice packs in his groin and armpits but I'm afraid it will shock his little body? :/
@tmow they offered tamaflu but the side effects were nausea and vomitting so I really didn't want to add that extra feeling of both to him... And they do I called and that's how I ended up in the ER... The nurses line is connected with Tricare and they all tried to squeeze me in but nothing... :(
I just had a bad stomach bug. I was in a lot of pain. When I spoke with the doctor they said do not use ibuprofen as it irritates your tummy more. The pain wasn't so bad when I stopped taking the ibuprofen. Hope he feels better soon ❤️
