my little girl calls my mom "mama" and she calls me the same. it doesn't even bother me. I think it's kind of sweet

If it helps they're from Iraq and I've only known Bebe or bibi be used from them and all the others I know from Iraq.
Deleted·
Exactly what Serena mentioned. She's doing it on purpose. It doesn't make me mad but I can't help but feel bothered by it. She's a very sweet woman.

My kids call me mama, that's what it is in Arabic. Dad is Baba, DHS mom teta, and his dad Jido. I'm not sure where that is coming from I've never heard it before.
Deleted·
Are you sure she just isn't trying to teach him Arabic?
Deleted·
Yes, I'm sure she wasn't trying to teach him Arabic. She did the same thing with ds1 which is now 7 and it took 4 years to get him to quit calling her mom in Arabic.
Deleted·
I know there's so many dialects with Arabic too.
Deleted·
Idk I just came to say I looked at your picture and you two are a gorgeous couple!
Deleted·
Thank you so much mommynes!! I appreciate that ?☺️

Maybe it's an iraqi thing ??!! In arab and we never called our grandmothers anything but teta... and our mom's won't even try to make our babies call her mama or immy or yami. However I know in some arabic dialects, they use yamma for older relatives.

We always used Sito or teta for grandma and Jido for grandpa as the official terms. It's also really common in our family (and our friends families) for people to call children by their title. Like, my dad calls my son and nephews "jid" or"jido" sometimes. It's just a term of endearment to them. It's really common in my area but ive never asked other folks if their families did it.

She's trying to make your kid call her uma or ya uma?
She's trying to make them call her mom! ? Nice try grandma.
Eta: all of my moms grandkids call her gida and grandad is ged or Gid. I know I'm not spelling it right lol
Deleted·
Yes @dontspankme
I wasn't for sure how to spell it. Lol
I hear younger kids say mama but it's always the older ones calling their moms yamma (sp?)
@serena, if that comment was for me, I'm not Arabic. Lol
That's why I asked if it was common or something that they do just in my dh family.
Deleted·
I think Serena was talking to me lol. I call my mom uma or mom. It's no way even close to the word grandma. It can be confusing for your lo too.
Deleted·
Lol okay! I was confused for a minute.. ?
I mean, I'm not mad at it but it just bothers me when she does it and points to herself while saying it. It's definitely not something that I will be pissed at or anything like that..
Thanks ladies!

My husband is Jordanian. My son calls his parents jido (grandpa) and teta (grandma)
Deleted·
I've never heard of teta before this post lol. Grandpa is the same though.
Deleted·
My husband's family calls grandma "jeta" and mom "umi" or "um _____" (insert oldest sons name).
Deleted·
Pookie, ya I hear that a lot. By calling the family with the oldest sons name.
Deleted·
Yes, Serena's, I call her um saif out of respect. Her son's cal her umi.

My mil is Turkish. She doesn't try that but wants my girls to call me anne (Turkish for mom) instead of momma. I don't mind, I kinda laugh about it cause my 15 month old will say momma momma! And MIL will say no call her anne! My 4 year old calls me anne too.

Lol some of my cousins when they were babies, used to call my grandma, Mama because my aunties say that to my grandma. I honestly wouldn't mind if my kids did the same. We're Palestinians and say sito, teta, jido, and sido. Husband uses teta and jido and I grew up saying sito and sido.
Deleted·
I've never heard of that! My daughter calls my bestfriend mom teta for grandma and that's what all the kids call her. (She can't talk yet but that's what we call her lol) Maybe she just wants to be called that and if that's the case and your not comfortable with it I would talk to your DH about it again
Deleted·
I'll talk to him about when it happens again. Hopefully he will be there too so he can correct her when she does it. She gets her feelings hurt easily and cries at almost everything so I'm not sure how he will say it to her. I just can't have my kids call her mom when she's their grandma. Dh thinks it's normal which is fine because that's how he grew up but I know for a fact he wouldn't like it if our boys called their grandpa dad.
Thanks for the replies ladies!

Yeah some families are like that. Actually my Aunts grandkids call her Umah. I don't think she is intentionally trying to offend you in any way. But I get what you are saying. I would not want my kids calling dh's mom or even my mom Umah. Jida will do just fine. Just tell your husband and see what he will say. Good Luck.

Thanks jojo. ?

I don't know about for mothers, but my uncle is from the Middle East and has always called his kids "daddy". For example, he would say, "come to daddy, daddy" regardless of if was his daughter or son. He still does this to his daughter who is 18 and it drives her crazy.
Deleted·
My dad does this too, he'll say baba to us regardless of our ages lol, they're so used to saying it to us when we we're little and can't break the habit. My grandparents do the same too. It's a form of endearment.
