Hey fellow mamas, I have a situation that I needed some insight on. I had my baby May 1st,2018 via emergency c-section. My baby was born at 34 weeks gestation and is now only 13 days old. I wanted to breastfeed my baby but he is so small that his latch is not strong enough to stay due to his small cheeks. So I began pumping milk but had to supplement with Similac formula until my supply started picking up. My dilemma came in when I had the worst case of constipation world has ever known to man a few days ago. I realized immediately that my prescribed Iron pill given to me upon my discharge from the hospital could be to blame. After my episode with constipation, I noticed that my babies next diaper was full of rock hard little pebbles. Because I could not stomach the idea of my baby being in as much pain as I was in, I stopped feeding him my breast milk. When I chose to take a small break from pumping I realized that my milk supply is even lower. I literally only skipped 2 days to try and give myself time off the iron pills to hopefully get the iron levels down out of my milk. Now it seems that my milk is drying up. My question is: once your milk starts to dry up will it start back coming down ever or once it’s dry it’s dry until your next pregnancy? Any suggestions on how to increase my milk supply before it completely dries up?
Power pumping ever 1-2 hrs(which can be hard with a nb) can boost supply back up. Honestly the formula could cause constipation more then the breastmilk. Breast milk should give him liquidy poops regardless if your taking a supplement.
His stool is likely hard from milk combining. Breast+formula. Iron pills aren't effective and you shouldn't have to suffer from constipation. If you need iron, switch to FLORADIX. great product.
Keep nursing to get your supply and keep nursing so your baby can learn. It takes 2 weeks or more for baby to learn breastfeeding and he can't learn without your breast. Watch some deep latching videos on YouTube. Search terms: deep latch, flipple technique.
Try different breastfeeding positions. Side lying worked REALLY well for me as it seemed more natural and allowed his small mouth to latch onto the larger breasts.
If you absolutely can't get him latching please speak to a lactation consultant from your hospital.
Water water water, latch latch latch. I can send you a video that helped me get my son to latch. He had a small mouth too. Let him nurse as much as possible. You can do this mama:)😎😊
Breastfeeding is like supply and demand
The more hey demand, the more you supply haha
To get it restarted you need to be pumping as often as he would be feeding, so 20 minutes or so, every 2-3 hours
If you keep regularly pumping your body will get used to those times and will produce milk for you
Breast milk is less likely to make your baby constipated than formula, so if baby was constipated, it would be the formula
Just keep pumping / feeding as often as you can and it will come back xx
I was told your breasts will fill if you keep emptying them. So pump even after breast feeding to make sure they are empty. Try the various lactation cookies and such. Also drink a lot of water. Good luck, Mama!! There are a lot of moms on youtube who have broken it down to a science. Look them up.
