I just stopped and my son is 2 1/2. He would actually throw a fit and not want to stop. I tried iron supplement Bc it taste so gross and he still didn’t stop. I ended up putting bandaids on my nipples and then telling him I had ouchies. I kept doing it every time and he would just accept it and not ask again. He eventually stopped asking. A friend of mine said she put wasabi on her nipples out of desperation. I wouldn’t try that though but I guess as last LAST resort. But the bandaid one worked for me. I would also distract him with other stuff and make sure he had a little more to eat so he wouldn’t be hungry.

How often does your 2 year old nurse?

I feed both my babies. My son is 2 and my daughter is 6 months. I pump for my son though, he gets about 12 oz a day. Our pediatrician didn’t say anything about not feeding them both :/

Is your newborn gaining weight and growing like he/she is supposed to? If the answer is yes then i would get a second opinion. Not all doctors are supportive of extended or tandem nursing. My local lactation consultant encouraged me to nurse both my babies as long as i could. Many people tandem nurse. Do you nurse your newborn first and then allow your 2 year old to nurse? I weaned my 2nd son before he was ready and it was a nightmare.

@hilda_medrano, my sister did mention putting something in my nipples, but I’m afraid my newborn will get the aftertaste even if I wipe it off lol but I like the band aid one. Maybe I’ll give that s try. He will throw a fit & won’t stop nursing as well.

@orionsmomma, I only nurse him when he’s ready for a nap & at night when he’s ready for bed. I am thinking of pumping for our newborn, so that I can go back to work in a couple of months. But I did get 2 different opinions about nursing him still so I’m like 🤷🏻‍♀️ lol

@linsceb, he’s only 5 days only now. But he eats quite a bit, every 2 hours & such. He’ll get full as well. I got 2 different opinions, I was told at first it’s ok. 2nd visit, different doctor, said I needed to stop my 2 year old completely. I always feed the baby first then my toddler. My milk supply has gone up a lot, I actually need my 2 year old to empty them if my NB can’t lol

I weaned my son for the fear of this. Many women still breastfeed. If you want to continue I would let him nurse but stay on a side (left or right) and your body will know the difference and what to produce. As long as baby is gaining weight its ok. If your body cant produce enough for both then I would wean him. I started out by cutting out naps, then mornings, finally bed time. He did cry but it was only a few days. He realized I wasn't giving in. Good luck to you mama!

Breast milk is “smart” enough to provide the proper nutrients for both kids. As long as baby is a healthy weight, and gaining properly, there is no need to stop nursing your older child
