Hello, sorry if this is unwanted advice but baby led weaning is solely giving baby actual food, no purees at all. Giving baby purees and doing blw creates different eating habits for babies so ideally should not be mixed either. Purees tell baby they can just swallow the food straight away whereas blw gives baby independence and confidence with food to chew it (their gums are hard) then to swallow. So giving a purée baby a finger food must be watched closely as they are like likely to just swallow and is then choking hazard.

I did blw with both of mine and started them off with steamed sticks of veg, carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, mash then soft fruit in sticks too. Within about a week she was eating everything we were eating like spaghetti bolognaise, mince and dumplings, chicken curry and rice, roast dinners etc. And breakfast she had oat fingers, pancakes, crumpets toast etc. It does create a mess but she does love it and is very independent with doing it now at 11 months. There's lots of ideas all on Pinterest and instagram etc to have a look at.

Hope that helps with anything x

I do BLW with my daughter (9 months) I just started her on whatever veg we were having with dinner cut to finger length. Then after a couple of weeks when my husband was less nervous we started giving her everything we have but deconstructed. For example if we were having a cheese and tomatoe sandwich, she’d have fingers of bread, cheese and cherry tomatoes cut into quarters to practice her pincher grip. Dry cooked pasta and veg is great for starting out, all babies seem to love toast but if you are a little nervous I would give it a few weeks because it can stick to the top of babies mouth x

I chopped up fruit and veg into stick shapes so they could hold and chew. Or veg like broccoli just gave it whole. I'd offer food from our plate. Strips of chicken. A whole potato or Yorkshire pudding. Anything really. As long as it's long enough for them to hold it as they chew or gum it. Banana and toast are good starter foods.

Baby led weaning is no puree. It's straight onto solids so you skip the puree phase when it comes to dinners etc (obv minus baby cereal, yoghurts).

@sara-lou86 @kayleeebeee thanks ladies I've obviously got mixed up 😂😂 I went to a baby wrsninh group and she said to basically feed Kai what I have which I understood then I read different things on Facebook weaning groups where they purèe it so that's where I've got confused 😂 I was given recipes to try too and none are purèe 😂 I'm blaming baby brain ☺ thanks for keeping me right lol! xx

@kayleeebeee am I right in thinking they should start with one meal a day and gradually build it up? xx

That's what I did Hun, I started with tea as it's a meal where we all sit at the table and eat together, so she was able to watch us and learn and experiment herself with the food. I then added breakfast within about a week as she was so independent and loved the food.

You should also accustom yourself to the signs and the differences between choking and gagging during blw. As many babies gag which doesn't mean they're choking. So as a mum you should stay calm whilst they work through it, if you panic so will they ☺️ xx

@kayleeebeee I think I'll start at tea time so it's not just me and him bit his dad too ☺, I hope I notice the difference sometimes he'll start coughing his milk up and I usually leave him to bring it up himself I got told they need to learn as if we help them by patting their back we can make it worse.. there's so much learning to do lol xx

@lburns15 yeah I was told they should be able to hold it cause they can't see what's in their hand so it needs to be big enough to grab or something like that lol 😂 I'll maybe avoid toast til he's used to swallowing veg etc x
