Have any of you momma's had their gallbladder removed? I ended up in the hospital last night with gall stones and it was pretty much the worst pain ever. The Dr said they're more likely to come back now and I do not want to experience that again!
If you've had yours removed what was the recovery like and were there any changes in your daily life after?
I wouldn’t live with it. Gallbladder attacks are the worst pain I’ve ever dealt with. Including my labors with both kids. I legit thought I was dying and would just roll around on the floor crying telling dh I was having a heart attack.
I had mine removed when DS was 2 months old and recovery was so easy. I didn’t take any medicine, not even ibuprofen, after.
I’ve had like 6/8 “phantom” attacks that feel the same way though. I’ve ended up in Er and they just said my pancreas was creating stones.
Laughing so hard at some of these comments. 😂😂😂 the bathroom troubles are the WORST for sure. No gallbladder+metformin and I might as well just not eat. 🤷🏻♀️
Also, I was twenty weeks pregnant when I had mine removed and it was still the easiest. I guess it’s different for everyone, but the relief I got was so worth the surgery.
I’ve had 5 surgeries, 2 c sections, wisdom teeth cut out, and a tonsillectomy at 19, and my gallbladder surgery. The gallbladder was the easiest for me. Putting it off can make things so much worse, although the bathroom thing is true. 😩 I hate using public restrooms but if we eat out a good bit away from home there is no holding it.
@thelittleoilers17, caffeine does it to me pretty bad. Thanks for clarifying regarding intent; it's difficult to interpret tone over text! 😊
Idk I had my gallbladder enlarge because a stone got stuck and blocked the duct and it could have ruptured. Not trying to scare you but that is scary crap!!
@thelittleoilers17 I love dairy! I could be ok without alcohol I can't even remember the last time I drank.
@scruffy.nerf.herder @thelittleoilers17 I only get gallstones after giving birth and like maybe 1 or 2 other times a year, so would y'all recommend getting it removed or just leaving it alone?
@scruffy.nerf.herder, it’s supposed to be funny but I have no gallbladder and trust me there are days it sucks sooooooo bad! Stuff goes right thru you and I can’t have alcohol or dairy!
@thelittleoilers17, I'm not sure if your comment is supposed to be funny or mean.... I'm hoping for funny. It's not very fun living with the side effects of no gallbladder😫
I’ve had mine removed because it was only functioning at 3% and obviously that’s not good. Surgery is a quick recovery. I didn’t think recovering was bad at all. Be sure to have a small pillow with you (if the hospital doesn’t supply them) because my first couple of days I walked around with the pillow against my stomach because I couldn’t walk straight and for some reason that helped me with the soreness.
Some after recovery things I have discovered (and everybody is different, you’ll have to listen to your body and figure out your own body’s triggers):
-Fast food gives me the mega emergency shits. It’s all I can do to make it to the bathroom in time.
-anything fatty or greasy tears me up
-bloating is a horrible problem, worse than before having my gallbladder taken out.
BUT there have been some good things:
-no more terrible pain
-no more throwing up everything I eat
-I am actually more prone to lead a healthier lifestyle since my body rejects junk food basically
It all depends on the person’s body. And believe me, if you consume something your body can’t handle, it will let you know really fast. Good luck! I know I probably just made this sound terrible but it’s not. I am happy I had mine taken out because I was in so much pain and so miserable. I feel much better now!
I have gallstones too! I was actually scheduled to have surgery to remove it early February but found out I was pregnant. I’ve had a couple of attacks so far. I’m hoping to have it removed soon after I have this baby. The pain is no joke.
Um I'm not sure because I live in Australia but I just got mine from the pharmacy/drug store
@mamagunn.no.1, thanks for the information on this! Can you find digestive enzymes at big box stores like Target or Walmart? Or is this something I should look for at a health food store?
@scruffy.nerf.herder definitely helps 100% better than probiotics. It mimics what your gall bladder does so minimises the production of bile in your stomache. With your gall bladder gone you have an over production of bile because it has nowhere to go anymore and the digestive enzymes help to break it down. It helps with the constant going to the bathroom too lol I highly recommend it!
@mamagunn.no.1, I took a probiotic for several years without much impact to my bathroom troubles post-gallbladder removal. Are digestive enzymes different? Would this help better than probiotic?
@strik021, the intubation and subsequent throat pain caught me off guard. It didn't dawn on me that they would intubate and I was so confused when I woke up with the rawest sore throat and mouth. My only other surgery was a C-section, so I went in a little clueless!
@thatcatchyusername02 Ugh that's horrible maybe I'll just live with it then.
I've had over 15 surgeries. My gallbladder was by far my worst one. Not the surgery its self. But the gas they fill you up with. It went to my shoulders a chest. If you are like me, I was like I don't see how gas can't hurt that bad until mine was done. Never again.
Also, the first time I ate. I didn't make it to a bathroom. It's that bad. Everytime I eat. I have to go.
I had mine out 3 yrs ago. Recovery time was a few days and a relief from the constant attacks I was having once a week. I was on a surgery waiting list to have it removed but had so many attacks i ended up in emergency surgery with a giant stone blocking the pipe to my pancreas. They key hole scars are tiny too. I had a problem running to the toilet for probably the first year but it has settled down a lot. I've always ate pretty healthy too so cutting back on fatty food was not a problem, but that will help with bile production. Also a good probiotic will help. If you find your belly is really upset after and you can't deal with it, digestive enzymes are a life saver.
I had mine removed 1 week after delivering my 1st son. Recovery was no problem (worst part for me was the throat pain from the intubation). I will say my digestive system is horrible now and I stay close to home after meals 😂
@wombraiders, when your insides rebel against you, you won't care about using a public toilet, just getting to one in time! Then blessed relief Lol 😂
@wombraiders, @biscuitsngravy.pls, also, my doctor recommended calcium supplements to help counteract the bile issue from loss of the gallbladder. Helps some days.
@wombraiders, @biscuitsngravy.pls, yes indeed! The changes to your digestive system can be rough. Sometimes "explosively" rough! The worst is when you're in a car and have to pray you can find a bathroom in time.
As far as recovery, mine was pretty easy compared to C-section. Just take it easy for a week, and you'll be good.
@wombraiders, if you’re not one to poop In public I would suggest you get used to it 😂 it’s awful but what can ya do.
@biscuitsngravy.pls lol that's what I've heard about the bathroom and honestly that's one thing that scares me!
I had mine removed when my first son was 6 months. I had awful pain that would leave me on my face on the floor just sweating and crying. But it always passed within 30 minutes so I just lived with it for months. Finally I couldn’t anymore and got it taken out. I also had pancreatitis because of it. But recovery was easy for me because my mom stayed with me a few weeks. You’re not allowed to lift over a gallon of milk and I had a 6 month old. I felt like the recovery was worse than my c section, I guess because it’s multiple incisions? I don’t really know. But once you get it taken out make sure you’re always close to a bathroom 😅
@wombraiders I'm in the same boat! I was just hospitalized for pancreatitis and I had 2 stones removed. Now they want me to have my gallbladder removed, but I've been so scared of the recovery! I always seem to have complications with stuff like that. I also just had a c section 7 weeks ago and now 3 kids at home 😩
Had mine done and as soon as I woke up I went to the l&d to stay with my sister while she was in labor. Lol went home for a nap, and went right back up to the hospital. So recovery wasn’t that bad, just like you did 100 crunches after not working out in a while 😂 you can’t lift up on anything more than 20 lbs for 2 weeks I think is what they told me. You’d want to do it when someone’s at home to help you for at least 2 days imo
@wombraiders thats awful. My fil has stomach problems and i keep telling him to demand his galbladder be checked but he wont. I swear thats his problem
@cprater0033 At least you don't remember it lol. Ugh I've had issues with my stomach since I was a kid and the drs never figured it out they would give me meds and then when that didn't work they'd try something else. Eventually O just gave up and dealt with the pain.
@wombraiders thanks! They had me so out of it i dint remember hardly anything. Im just happy to have it out. Lol. It felt like i was dying and no drs would listen to me at all. I was "to young " to have galbladder problems and they all thought it was my heart, i have a pacemaker. It took over 6 months of every heart test that can be ran before anyone would listen, and even then my so had to pretty much yell at them to check it.
i had mine removed in february. its the worse pain ever!! schedule an appointment to get surgery asap! ... the actually surgery took about a hour and half. recovery wasnt that bad. you are in pain while you get out and cant bend down. hurts but it gets better in a week. And i didnt get sick after. till now i feel good
@roguemommyofjx3 did they give you any meds for it? They gave me a prescription of zofran last night.
@cprater0033 Wow that sounds so stressful! Im sorry you and your son had to go through that but im glad y'all are all better now!
@wombraiders, yes. I was sick before I had mine removed to the point of I couldn’t keep anything down. It took a few weeks for that to stop.
I had mine removed when ds was 1. Recovery wasnt bad, but i had a ton of problems.
I had stones stuck in the duct so before they could remove my gallbladder i had to have an ERCP done to remove the stuck stones (on dec 9th). The next morning i was to have my galbladder removed, i had a bad feeling before surgery so i made my inlaws bring ds to see me before hand, my surgery and wake up went fine. Ds spiked a fever while i was under though and ended up having a seziure when they couldnt get it broke, i made them take him to the er, (dec 10th). I ended up signing out AMA and rode the ambulance with him to cabell huntington, a almost 2 hour drive. Stayed with him until my so, inlaws, and dad could get there. Then pretty much collapsed. A stone had broken loose and got stuck in the duct again when they removed my gallbladder and i became extremely dehydrated. I landed in cabells er twice, i left once because they couldnt get an iv started the second time they finally did. I had anpther ERCP done to remove the stone (dec 12). Ended up with pancreatitis from it, and landed in there sicu for almost a week. Ds stayed for a week as well, he was released a day before me. It was an awful experience, but id go through it again if i had to not go through the pain of gallbladder attacks.
I had mine removed at 20 weeks pregnant, the surgery was easy, recovery was easy, but I was still sick for a little while after.
Thank you! I would like to get it removed as long as the recovery is not to bad since I have 4 kid's that need me.
Ugh yes it was by far the worst pain I've ever been in and don't want to experience it ever again!
I was rolling in my bed crying to my So that I thought it was my appendix.
