A 16 month old (a very smart boy) and a 4 year old (very sweet and playful) are in a room playing together. 2 parents (one for each kid) have a visual into the room. Do you 1) have an adult in the room at all times, 2) just keep looking in every so often, 3) other?

And if it was YOUR kid that was the one that is known to be hateful and a bully (16 month old, was never taught not to hit), would you go in there to reprimand him for hitting whenever he did? Would you leave it up to the 4 year olds parents? Or simply just let them play????

My daughter is absolutely NOT perfect. But I know her and her “constantly pushing him” comes from him coming after her and I know that FOR A FACT. He does not get disciplined AT ALL. By that age my daughter knew right from wrong. I would still have to occasionally get onto her, she was learning her emotions. But this child is wild. He doesn’t hit just out of anger. He hits because he finds it funny.

If you’re worried about your child then you should be in there. The younger one isn’t your child, nor is he your responsibility. Watch and worry about your own child and leave parenting the other child to the parents.

@jhalsted1995, how can I leave parenting to them when they won’t parent???? They will not interfere at all when he starts hitting her and then laughing when she’s whining and crying for him to stop. But I can’t not let her go in there because then she thinks she’s in trouble.

@brianne, so then you supervise your child. You can redirect their child but ultimately they’re the parents. If you don’t like the situation you need to change something and if that means you need to be in there with your daughter than that’s what you need to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️

If the room was safe, I'd probably poke my head in every so often or if I heard something that needed my attention. I would definitely tell the other child not to hit, but if his parents were there I'd leave it to them to deal with the punishment. If it was only me and his parents were not there, like they'd left him in my care, I'd do the same thing I'd do with my own son...give him warning, and then timeout or call his parents.

If I knew my child was the aggressor, I'd probably still only poke my head in but after the third time he didn't listen I'd take him out of the room and he wouldn't be allowed to play anymore. (Unless he actually purposefully really hurt the other child, then he'd be out of there immediately.)

Kids, even young ones, do need to learn how to handle different situations on their own, but that doesn't mean I won't step in if needed.

I may be in the minority, but if my son was acting in a way that he needed to be reprimanded and I wasn't doing it, for whatever reason, I would want the other parent/grandparent to step in and tell him he's wrong, and punish him if that was what's needed. (Not a punishment like hitting, but things like timeout or not being allowed to play.)

@nomli, he hits her and laughs about it. It drives me up a while.
