I've never been asked to hold my breath. Im guessing since the baby is so tiny it may be easier to pick something up.

When you breath your organs move slightly due to your lungs expanding and contracting and your diaphragm moving up and down. By holding your breath you halt that movement for a moment, allowing the tech to get a difficult image

I do ultrasound, not trained officially in OB, but I do cardiac and vascular, and it’s all the same concept
