What my Dr explained to me was that it's the position of where baby's head is. Usually they will say how far dilated you are then add how far down baby is... here is the picture I could find to explain it. I had to look it up while I was pregnant. As long as it's the same thing your Dr was talking about.

It’s means the baby is starting to engage into your pelvis and into position for birth, once they’re at station 0 they’re fully engaged, and anything over after station +3, the baby’s head is pretty much crowning(coming out of your vagina)... here’s a link that breaks everything, hope it helps...
