You can put him in a convertible car seat when ever your ready. My son got to heavy for me to carry in the infant car seat so we switched him over at around 6 months.

I had my son in a rear facing toddler seat at about 11 months

See here's the thing my son is 2 months premature but next month he will be a year old so I don't know if I should getting a toddler seat or not

Convertible seats can be used starting at new born so you can do that

I have the graco4ever and we love it...can do rear facing which is safest up to 40 pounds. My daughter is almost 3 years and still does rear facing, we got her this one when she was 9 months...she loves it. Then it can do forward facing with harness up to 65 pounds then converts to a booster with back then to a booster without. We love that we shouldn't have to buy her another seat. From what I have seen most convertible car seats can do rear facing to 40 pounds because it is safest to rear face until 2 years. I would look up some different kinds and get what's best for you.
