I am wanting to apply to be a foster parent. However my husband has a simple possession charge for marijuana; it is considered a mistermeaner here in SC. Will that disqualify us from being able to foster a child? To embarrassed to call and ask. No he does not currently smoke this charge was from 2 years ago.

Yes it can because it’s a drug related charge.

Any drug related charge unfortunately can automatically disqualify you.

Maybe? I know someone who had a pretty shady past, not drug related though, and they were worried, but still passed. Rules and time limits always change so it never hurts to ask. Don't be embarrassed, though. It's not like he committed murder. It only marijuana. Which yes is against the law, but it's dumb.

I called and spoke with the woman in charge of fostering at DSS. She will return my call in the morning to let me know. But she said more than likely it should be okay since it's just marijuana and a simple possession at that. She said if it was a felony drug charge then that would disqualify us. But this charge is only a mistermeaner.
