I had them 2x a week from 32 weeks on with my last son. I went into preterm labor at 28 and 32 weeks and was put on bed rest being 3cm at 32 weeks and I kept having random episodes of contractions and dilating a 1/2 cm a week after that, once I hit 38 weeks they didn't stop any labor. They look for a handful of things with the test I think.
@skysmommy04 you go into their room (mine have a recliner type chair and a tv, an extra seat for your support person) and get weighed, then blood pressure. After that they put two elastic straps down and you sit down. They put jelly on your tummy and two monitors. One for baby's heart rate and one for contractions. They keep you on at least 20m. (Though our first four took over an hour) if your little one doesn't keep their heart rate 15 above base line for 5 seconds or more then you'll end up doing a bio physical profile (ultrasound to check 8 things and you get a score).
