Moms I’m having an issue. I recently made a temporary move to move back home while I complete the last few months of my nursing degree. I’m a young mom I had my son when I was 19 going on 20. Now I’m a mom that believes in raising my kids to be self sufficient and independent. Now my son is 5 and I make him sweep the kitchen and dining room, vacuum his room, and rinse dishes after I wash them. My daughter wipes down the tables, picks up toys etc. now my mom and I argue because she says I’m abusing my kids by giving them chores, that they’re too young to perform the task I’m giving them. My mom stopped cleaning up after me and sister when we were 13 and it affected me in a very bad way. I managed to get myself in order, but ladies what do you consider too young to begin chores. Or at least the task I make my 5 year old complete.

Sounds to me like what you give your son to do he's capable of doing. I don't think it's a beer and I don't think it's too much. my DD is going to be 4 in about a month and she has chores she helps me empty the dishwasher she puts her and dishes in the sink she helps me for laundry she helps me transfer laundry from washer to dryer to the couch to be folded. Some of the things she does like folding laundry he still young to be doing but I allow her to fold it the way that she does it and then I just fix it later when she doesn't see. I think instilling chores and your child at a young age is important.

Abuse* not beer. Lol

That's the perfect age to have them help around the house. It teaches them how to be responsible and sets good habits for the future.

I dont think your son is to young at all. I wouldnt have started my daughter with them yet but thats all on you mama. As long as your doing it to benefit them and not yourself then I would say keep doing what your doing. Now my parents made me do a BUNCH of chores way to many in my opinion and now I absolutely hate doing any of them granted I know I have to so I suck it up and do it but also try to keep in mind the amount you give them and maybe reward them.

@mommiesaremagical14, thank you. I believe in the same method. Moving back home is going to be a real challenge for me. She’s just always trying to bring me down with my parenting

@beebaby, exactly. I clean the tedious things, but it’s not too much for him to sweep or RINSE dishes. I scrub them he just rinses the soap and scum away and loads them in the dishwasher

@ashtonndamon, I always reward them. And my son loves cleaning up. Cleaning up after himself is something that I feel he should learn. Sweeping and vacuuming is not much. If you’re old enough to make the mess you’re old enough to clean it especially if you know what you’re doing. I believe it builds character and discipline.

If they are able to do the tasks you're asking them to do without hurting themselves or making more work for you then they aren't too young. I think the sooner you get kids to do these kinds of things the more likely they are to do them own their own once they are older. I make my son pick up his toys before he goes to bed every night and he's only 1.5. If he knew how to use the vacuum and it wasn't so big for him I'd let him do that too because he's obsessed with the vacuum lol

Tell your mom that abusing them would be making your 5 year old take care of his baby sister while you're at work, making him cook dinner for themselves, making him clean your bedroom just because you don't want to, making him clean up the entire house. (To be fair I was actually 7 and my sister was 6 months old, but you get the point.)
What you are doing is teaching your kids to be clean people who will grow and know how to care for themselves. You aren't hurting them in the slightest.

@damiensmommy1117, thank you 🙏 it’s so frustrating because my kids become very disorganized and disrespectful when they’re around her because she’s always going against what I say. And we have to live with her for the next 5 months. I know I’m doing the right thing but thanks.

Oh gosh,my mother in law says stuff like this all the time. We have 3 girls 8,11 and 2 they all have chores. She said we need to give them money for doing it,my husband and I both had chores growing up and never got money because ya know we had a place to live, power, all that. Our kids have name brand shoes, boutique clothes, phones, game systems, they aren’t hurting for anything. They have been doing chores for years. She said it’s to much for them but it’s literally cleaning up after themselves.
Feeding the dogs(dogs THEY wanted)
Loading and unloading the dish washer
Cleaning their rooms
Their bathrooms
Taking out the trash
Wiping down the table and counters after meals
Sweeping the floor, now this is divided by the two older ones they take turns and seem to enjoy it. Our 2 year old helps load the dishwasher and picks up toys and stuff. They older girls let her help as much as possible.

@randahubbard89, and that’s wonderful. The older my kids get the responsibility they will be given. You’re doing an awesome job
