Yes you need to be in case of an emergency and you need a c section they sanitize your whole belly and back and you having clothing on will only make it all more difficult

They made me get in a patient gown and here is why

The arms have quick snaps, so if ANY issue arises that they need to do any other emergency surgery they have fast access. If you need an IV or a PIC line they can go around those leads. And of course the easy access at the bottom for deliver.

I had an IV for meds, but I’m also a rare blood type, so it would have served another purpose in an emergency. They undid my top for immediate skin to skin. That was what I wanted and had put in my birth plan. My mom did the best she could with making sure I was covered for our first picture. My second picture my step mom wouldn’t wait 5 minuets for me to finish getting dressed and do a quick glamour check after I pushed on and off for 3 hours.... I was NOT happy, but I don’t look horrible.

And yes you can cover your boobs, unless you want that immediate skin to skin, where they plop your goo covered baby on your chest and then start to clean them up. But then you can have family wait to take a pic. It all comes down to personal preferences and not having emergency anything.

They make you strip down completely and put on a hospital gown of course in private and they keep all your regions as covered as possible. What you see is skin to skin and when the baby is born the nurses will unbutton the top of your gown so baby can have instant contact. It’s VERY healthy for the baby and you’re still pretty much covered they just uncover you enough so that the baby can rest on your chest in between your boobs.
