When can I teach my daughter not to hit people? She's got to where she's doing it on purpose and thinks it's funny. She's also pulling hair and facial hair. Yes I know this is all normal. And she's just a baby. But I was curious when she could understand "no that hurts" especially with the new baby on the way

We started telling my son around 6 & 1/2 months “no” and now by 8 months he understands that when we say no he has to stop..

@tyoungdeer okay, I just worry about her deciding to hit her new sibling. She's only four months but there is power behind her hits lol

@maesmommy04, lol yeah they’re stronger than you would think, that’s why we started telling our son no so soon cause I’ll be having his sister in February.. but by then he’ll be 1 so he’ll understand a little more

@tyoungdeer mine will be around 11 months so she (hopefully) should understand not to hit the little one.

@maesmommy04, omg my little girl is same. She absolutely loves to pull hair and hit people. She thinks it’s hilarious too. She’ll pull hair so hard that you can hear it rip and she’ll hit like crazy. She’s also starting pinching and throwing like mini tantrums when she doesn’t get her way. I thought this stuff didn’t come along until way later but I guess I was wrong lol. I seriously thought my baby was the only one this violent at such a young age cause she started doing it around 4 months or so lol

@caseyann19 I didn't think it happened till they were older either. Lol. It is nice to know others are just as aggressive. She understands when I tell her to let go of my hair now but "no" still isn't something she understands.

My sister did parenting that didn't use the word "no". While that didn't work for me a lot of her techniques do. For instance, when she hits don't react. Simply take her hand and gently put it on your face. Show her parts of your face like your nose, eyes, mouth. Talk to her in a sweet voice and tell her how much you love her while doing it. Don't react to the bad simply re direct and show her what you would like her to do...just an idea. Good luck!

@mct sounds like a good method. But it's hard not to react to something that hurts. Last week she ripped the inside of my lip.

@maesmommy04 it is hard, but I couldn't believe how well it worked. Babies do pick up on emotion as well, so if you react sadness is better. "Oh that hurts, mama. We never want to hurt mama. Gently touches are best. That makes me happy." The words are even more effective when older, but I always talked to my daughter like she was an adult since the time I found out she was on the way. I'm sure you have your own mom dialouge. Hope this helps in some way!

We started telling my son "no" at 6 months. He definitely understands now. When he does hit or pull hair we tell him to stop. I tell him "that hurts", "let's practice nice touches", and "don't do that again".
