@mamaways, I know and it is because at its root it is a personality disorder. There is no medication to fix it and for as much therapy as the person could go through it is pretty much impossible to rewrite someone's personality. That is like trying to rewrite their DNA. Depending on how old they are this has been who they are for decades. Further, it is incredibly difficult to show anyone that their personality is flawed- they will almost always buck away from it and blame environment and other people for why they act the way they do. Narcissists in general have fragile egos and don't do well with criticism or taking responsibility for others emotions and to truly change or want to change someone has to recognize and accept both. Most clinicians recommend removing or limiting contact with narcissist because the amount of pain isn't worth it and it can lead to the other person needing intensive therapy to recover from it all.
@autumnarrival17 omg wow thank you so much for your comment. My son's father I believe is one. He doesn't know why he feels the way he does sometimes but hates when I say he's controlling or a narcissist. I can't pinpoint where it began but because no one else will agree with me he feels like I'm just being dramatic
@mamaways, it's very possible, and most people in his life probably just accept that "this is who he is" or don't get the full extent of him when he is feeling some type of way.
@mamaways, sorry I just saw this - to clarify, are you trying to figure out ways for you to deal with him or for him to deal with himself? Chances are he doesn't see himself as a problem so he is coping fine.
@autumnarrival17 you're exactly right. I tried to explain what it is to him and he laughed. Then when he finally took me seriously he told me until I have a degree he doesn't Want me diagnosing him. He said he'd get help but doesn't think he's controlling or a trigger to my health. He believes he's the best for me mentally and emotionally but I know that to not be true. He and my mother have a lot of the same traits but in different ways.
@autumnarrival17 I guess now I just need ways to deal with him... I may be staying a little longer to have my baby here then moving. I hope I'm not making another ass out of myself being too optimistic.
@mamaways, ugh it absolutely sucks to hear and I am sorry that his first instinct was to try and invalidate how you were feeling. You definitely know what is best for your body and your mind! If you like Pinterest or even through google, you can find very good strategies for yourself that can help you deal with his narcissistic tendencies which may help keep you less stressed in your pregnancy. Good luck and if need anything holler β€οΈ
@autumnarrival17 thank you so much! That's exactly what I need at this point like a mental/ emotional blocker to get through at least 6 weeks after baby boys birth then I can leave if he doesn't make any improvements like he says. He wants me to give him a year to get things right then we can move elsewhere since I believe his environment is a huge influence on his personality in a negative way. Thank you again. I love Pinterest lol I may make a private board catered to it so I can build myself up daily and tread lightly with him.
