Question.... My boyfriend keeps bringing up marriage. However, he can't afford a nice ring right now. He wants to just legally get married right now at the court house because we love each other, and for other reasons like me being able to be on his health insurance that he gets from work. (I am not on any health insurance.) and get me a ring, and do a ceremony later down the road... The thing is, I would LOVE to get married. I love him, and I want our daughter to grow up seeing that we love each other, and we're married. However, I really don't want to do it his way. I want to experience the excitement of being engaged, and having a ring. (Doesn't have to be an expensive one.) I want to have a small ceremony right away, not get married at the court house, and have a ceremony later down the road. (There's nothing wrong with that, just not want I really want or pictured getting married would be like.) Is it wrong or selfish of me to be this way? You can be brutally honest, I won't get offended.

@keeping_upwith_harperkate, Just tell him to buy a ring from Walmart. It's cheap and he can replace it when he has the money. My moms wedding band came from Walmart until they were able to purchase expensive ones. Don't settle, you'll regret it. Marriage is about compromise. Try talking to him about how you feel. See what he feels. A ring won't make him love you any more or less, but I do know it's sentimental to some women.

I completely understand this. I felt the same way as you. I didn't want to get married at the courthouse. I told my husband that I wanted a small ceremony and I did not want anything at the courthouse because it wasn't how I pictured my wedding day. He left for the Army and we still hadn't gotten married. But he came home on Christmas leave and the day before he left out of nowhere he said marry me tomorrow please I know it's not what you wanted but please just marry me I don't want to go back there without having you as my wife. So I agreed and we did have a courthouse wedding but he had set everything up in advance (I guess he knew I would say yes 😂) but he also spoke to them there and he asked that they do it very formal just like a real ceremony. It was beautiful. He had flowers in the room and we both dressed up and we're allowed 6 people to attend. We got to read vows (which I scribbled up in a few hours) and exchange rings. Seriously it was amazing I wouldn't have had it any other way.
