Today is the start of world breastfeeding week.
When I was pregnant I decided I would try out breastfeeding for a month because it would save us some money and I knew it was good for Bradley. I didn't go to a breastfeeding class, barely read up on it, and was ill-prepared.
When Bradley came, I had no clue what i was doing and felt so embarrassed when the nurse had to help me, even though that was her job. It was supposed to be something natural, but I couldn't get him to latch. The next month included lots of pain, from engorgement, cracked and blistered nipples, milk blebs, and clogged ducts. Before I knew it, I made it to a month. We were starting to get the hang of it, despite occasional pain and questioning my supply. I decided to keep going and started pumping.
I returned to work and pumped every 2 hours. I swear I've pumped more than I've slept since he has been born. But it was worth it because I could see him growing and I knew he was getting the best nutrition possible. I made our new goal six months.
I started having to nurse in public, with a cover of course. But then he started ripping the cover off because he wanted to see everything or he'd get too hot. I've become comfortable nursing without a cover thanks to the warm weather. I've never had any negative looks or comments that I've noticed. 🤷🏼♀️
Around five months I started having major supply issues when it came to pumping. I had to supplement with some formula and started him on some solids. It made me so upset that I didn't truly meet my goal of exclusively breastfeeding until 6 months, but I still pumped and nursed anyway. I battled clogged ducts and midnight pumping sessions.
Now, we're passed 7 months, on our way to a year. I'm so proud of myself for getting out of my comfort zone and doing this. I know he's a healthy, happy boy, and our bond is amazing. I love breastfeeding, and I wish that the negative attitude toward it would be gone.
If you made it this far, thanks. I just needed to share something so special to me. If you have negative comments, please message me instead of commenting. #WBW2017
