CARSEAT POST!

Since I see so many posts like this I feel I should address an issue. 1 years old is no longer the standard for flipping the car seat to forward facing. Experts have discovered that children are still not capable of holding their neck strong enough to prevent serious injuries in the case of a wreck. The new standard is 40 pounds or 40 inches! However, be sure to check what your car seat is suited for for rear facing because not all go to 40 pounds or 40 inches. If you turn your child around too soon from rear facing you increase the chances of your child getting seriously injured or killed in the case of an accident. If you have already turned your child forward facing it is not too late to turn them back around. Please consider the safety of your child. I constantly get ridiculed for using Google so often when it comes to things to do with my child but it is better to be informed than ignorant when it comes to what can harm your child. We all have the resources to inform ourselves and to stay updated. Please use them.

The recommendation is 2 years older minimum and it's nothing to do with height/weight of child. It's about the development of the vertebrae on their neck. I just recently shared an article on my page.

But I also want to add that not alll pediatricians are informed on these studies. My pediatrician handed me a paper saying forward facing at 1 years old and 20 pounds.... I just smh🤦🏼‍♀️

Where I live it doesn't matter how much they weigh if they aren't two years old they remain rear facing

@ilovemychildren, wish they'd change it in KY.

It's still 1 and 20 pounds but they recently changed law to keep kids in boosters longer so hopefully rearfacing is next.

@ashleydunn @ilovemychildren The AAP suggests 2 years old or the max weight or height for the car seat rear facing, which on most is now 40 pounds or at least the ones I have looked at. I personally wouldn't go by age because my daughter is small and I would prefer her to be protected. Unfortunately I see way too many people on here and Facebook sharing photos of their child forward facing before 2, sometimes even before 1. Which is why I made this post.

I believe it is up to the parents to stay informed on subjects like this. I don't know anyone that could not get access to internet if they wanted it.

@ravens_mommy, I was just saying that it doesn't matter weight or height it's all on age. The biggest excuse i see is "my baby's too big to rearface" and I was just stating that it doesn't matter how big the baby is , their neck vertebrae isn't finished fusing.

@vannahjam14 At birth my daughter was 5lbs15oz and 17 inches long. Not premie but defintely tiny and she has stayed tiny. She's 10 months and just now coming out of 3-6 month clothes and weighs 17 pounds. I have a cousin whose daughter is almost 4 and still rear facing because she's tiny. I mean, the weight limit is there for a reason and I don't understand why it gets ignored.

@ashleydunn Oh I believe you. I just believe it's safer to keep rear facing as long as possible. I agree 2 years should be the minimum.

@ravens_mommy, ps my children are tiny too. Well weight wise. My 5 year old just reached 40 pounds. When I got her seat it only rearfaces until 34 inches which she was at my 18 months so I turned her. That was BEFORE I was informed on rearfacing. My 1 year old is still rearfacing and will remain rearfacing until she reaches max of her seat. Which is 37 inches and 40 pounds but she's shorter than sissy so she'll make it to 2 and if not I'll buy another seat 🤷🏼‍♀️

@ashleydunn Well the guidelines also just recently changed in the past few years so it might have been different when your 5 year old was little. I believe the change is why car seat companies are upping their game on height and weight. I just know I don't want to get on social media one day and see that someone's child was killed or injured because of car seat not facing the right way.

@ravens_mommy, yes girl I love seeing the changes tthey are even printing it on the labels of car seats to rearface until age 2. It was on my SILS car seat when I borrowed it 🙌🏼

@ashleydunn I'm getting the excuse that the child is happier forward facing and that as long as they drive safe it doesn't matter. Like accidents and drunk drivers aren't things that exists.

@ravens_mommy, my child screamed almost the whole 8 hours because she hated her car seat. I still wouldn't have turned her around. Safety is more important than her being happy.

@ashleydunn Exactly! I rather my child be pissed off than dead. That's like a couple weeks ago there was a post about taking the child out of their car seat while going down the road to feed, or even while stuck in traffic. Just so dangerous and it made me upset to see how many women thought it was okay. Usually while in traffic you have the intial reason for back up then 1-5 accidents throughout, at least where I live that is.

@ravens_mommy, I was in a traffic jam and I leaned over to breast feed her. It hurt my back but it calmed her. It took 2 hours to go 9 miles 🙄

We atopped every two hours unless she fell asleep then we drove until she woke up lol

@ashleydunn That's what I do when I have to. She isn't a fan because she doesn't get snuggles with it lol
