Found out my best friend is pregnant & she has had diabetes since she was a little girl so if anyone…

My sister has been diabetic since she was 7 and just had a little boy in December. Her a1c levels went high, she became resistant to her insulin and had to up her doses a lot, and had a lot more doctor visits then usual. If she didn't go into labor naturally before 39 weeks she would've been induced. (Her water broke just before that and she gave birth on exactly 39 weeks, via c-section. He was ten pounds.

My fiancé's mother was diabetic as well. She had him via a c-section at 28 weeks due to complications.

@nomaci, do you usually have c-sections if you're diabetic?

There's a 95% chance of a c-section, according to her doctor, usually because the infant is huge or because of other complications.

There's also a higher chance of your baby needed to be in nicu, or at least a special care unit.

@nomaci, usually her blood sugar runs high but lately it's been running more on the low side, I'm assuming it's bc of baby?

Possibly. Your whole body is out of whack, and the baby is taking more nutrients and stuff.

She'll definitely need a high risk OB though. And her usual diabetes doctor will know what she should do.

Funny story. My fiancé's mom was told, because of the diabetes, that she should never risk having children. She went in for the consultation for a hysterectomy and they found a fetus!
