My first language is Arabic but I speak English as well my husband doesn't speak any Arabic only knows couple words. My mother doesn't speak any English so I don't know how my daughter will communicate with her when she's older. I want to teach her both but I'm scared she will struggle cause that's what happen to my younger brother since my mom doesn't speak English she only spoke Arabic to him and he grew up in the states so he hears English everywhere that he because confused and stopped talking and took longer to start learning and understanding both languages and now he's 7 and still doesn't speak so good

This was a great question. I want to teach my daughter English Spanish and ASL. None of my family is bilingual we all speak English but i am trying to learn as I teach her. Because i feel it's important for her to be able to communicate in Spanish. And ASL is just as important to me. Going to try some of these ideas.

My first language is Spanish. So when my first son was born that's all we spoke to him.. because English is all they speak to them in school, and now he's fluent in both languages. And we're doing the same with our baby

@erikacupcake, yes it is very hard work, everyone around my kids speak Spanish to them. The only place they are spoken to in english is in school. So thats why for me is so difficult for my husband to understand. They spend the whole day in school. We are traveling to Dominican republic for vacation in 2 weeks so im hoping they get a little more fluent in Spanish there.

@cubanese, I think that's a good idea! Did you ever have a problem with him connecting them and using both words at once?

@erikacupcake my boyfriend is from Mexico and he isn't completely fluent in English, it's very improper, he speaks in present tense like almost always, some past tense and doesn't understand some plurals, I try teaching him but he's ignorant. His sisters and parents do not speak English what so ever, so when I bring my son to their house it's purely Spanish and even family parties. I think if you spend time teaching words, or for a few hours or few minutes a day to speak only in that language. Watching TV, reading books are good. My son is almost 10 months and I feel he understands the both languages or at least knows there is a difference, he responds to Spanish , I can speak Spanish but I speak more English to him than Spanish. I promise it will be okay :) have your husband speak Arabic to her then, my boyfriend almost always speaks Spanish to him, like teasing him in Spanish haha. Oh and music too! That'd be a very good one.

@kfermin4138, That's my fear but I'm hoping I can curb that by frequently making sure they are spending time with kids that speak mostly only Arabic. My hubby is from Saudi and there are a lot of families that travel and stay for short term, so that could be an option. It's so complex honestly and takes a lot of hard work.. 🙊

@adrianliam, We were thinking about doing that as well. But I also thought that we should maybe mix a bit b/c my concern is that if I spend a lot more time with her I could see her depending on English much more.

For example, I would teach her both alphabets and read both types of books with her. 🤔

Well im dominican, so my family's first language is spanish, but some how even if i speak in spanish to my kids they only respond in english. My husband and i argue all the time because of this. He wants the kids to speak in spanish but they choose not too. 😩😩😩

@bluepenguin, English is my first language and my hubby's is Arabic. He is fluent in English as well, and I can speak Arabic moderately but I'm still learning.

His parents and most of his siblings live in the Middle East and cannot speak English very well. I just want to ensure she doesn't feel alienated from half of her family when she gets older. 🤐

I speak English to my son and his daddy speaks completely Spanish. That way he's getting both languages. That's what our pediatrician told us to do.

Are the two languages used frequently in the house? My son is very much in a lot of Spanish as well as English.
