So I was at work today and a Hispanic family came in to pay their bill. The parents didn't know much English, so their daughter was acting as a translator for us bc I don't know much Spanish.
After she left, my coworker (the only one I don't like), was like "I can't stand when people make their kids translate stuff for them. Just learn English."
🙄🙄 I said "Okay, but that kid is like 8 and she's already bilingual. That's pretty damn awesome. How many languages can you speak fluently now, let alone at 8 years old?"
Like...who is she to judge? Maybe she's helping her parents learn English. You don't know! It's not a requirement to live here, and her daughter is at an advantage knowing two languages. So...🙂 good for her!

I hate people like that , Iv been translating for my parents since I was little and threw me they learned English and where able to become us citizens 🙄 some people I swear

@beebaby @katiesmiles1 when I was growing up, I had a friend whose parents only spoke French. She translated for her parents and knew both English and French (and she learned others as well out of pure interest). She taught her parents English, and now she has works for the government as a translator for several different languages, gets to travel all over the place, and she's in college majoring in linguistics to further her career.

Close minded people really irritate me! They have no idea what the situation is... it's like just keep your know it all comments to yourself! 🙄 I am always amazed by the children who are bilingual! So amazing!

@beebaby @katiesmiles1 @dreamermom My coworker is racist af anyway. She won't help anyone who isn't white. 😐😐 which is odd, bc she and I are the only white people in the store, and I'm the only one she doesn't like lmao. But yeah. Anyway. I don't see any downside of it for the children aside from they might sometimes get annoyed by it?? They'll have such an advantage when they're grown. When you know more than one language, the amount of people you're able to communicate with opens up immensely, which means more opportunities for friendships, jobs, etc. It's such a benefit for the kids, and the parents too! I'm only fluent in English, but I can have conversations in French and Japanese, and I took Latin as well. It's pretty nice. I do wish I'd learned Spanish, though.

@scurlock.mommy, which is awesome !! So far I only know 4 languages and that's just from when I was growing up being taught , but yeah never discourage the kids , I have a 7 year old nephew who's learning Japanese and he's forced to translate it to his mom & she's learned it that way
