I started working on my credit when I was 18. I opened up a charge card with Kohl's, and then Target when I got pregnant. My credit score isn't like best, about 620, but I'm also only 20 years old. It takes time.
Also, accumulating credit doesn't HAVE to mean accumulating debt if you're smart about it. Once I get my current cards paid off, I'm getting an actual credit card and using it only for groceries.

Love this. I know way too many people who don't think credit matters. My policy was always "only spend the money I would have spent anyway on the credit card." Which means bills, groceries, and gas. If it's not a necessity, it doesn't go on the card. That way I never have to worry about late payments. If you take time to learn how to be smart about it, it's not a bad thing at all.

You score was better than mine. My mom used my name to open accounts. At 18 mine score was 445

The only issue i have with credit scores is when you have to have a damn near perfect score to find a decent place to rent. One shouldnt be turned away from a safe place to live just because of a stupid score. I have never been late on my rent but just because our credit isnt up to par shouldnt be a reason to turn us away. I totally agree that credit is important when buying a house and financing it, but is it shouldnt be as important when youre not borrowing 100k.

@jacqui2012.jl that's true! A lot of places around here just make the deposits higher if your credit isn't good.
